Our match prediction:
Together with Hertha Berlin, Mainz have been the biggest surprise package of the current campaign, seeing that not even the most optimistic of fans could have predicted such an impressive season. The Carnival Club have been especially impressive after the winter break, recording five wins in last six fixtures to climb to fifth in the standings, with fourth-placed Borussia M’gladbach in front by virtue of goal difference alone. Mainz were even able to defeat mighty Bayern Munich at Allianz Arena in midweek, so chances are they will dispose of relegation strugglers Darmstadt as well. The newcomers have shown some promise this season, but the difference in class is obvious when facing top table sides, and it will be very difficult for them to stop high-flying Mainz after the triumph in Munich. Darmstadt have lost four straight Bundesliga fixtures at home, scoring just one goal in the process, and we fully expect the trend to continue.
