Our match prediction:
Both PSV and Atletico Madrid are heading into their Champions League opener on the back of 4-0 triumphs. It was business as usual for the Dutch side, which got back to winning ways after a goalless draw with Groningen. An away 4-0 win over Nijmegen was a message of intent, with PSV scoring the total of eight goals in three matches. Still unbeaten in the 2016-17 season, Dutch side are preparing for their biggest challenge yet as they prepare to host Atletico Madrid. Loc Colchoneros have raised plenty of eyebrows with their weak start to the new season which saw them notch successive draws against minnows Alaves and Leganes, respectively. Diego Simeone was put under heavy criticism, but his team made a timely response with a 4-0 win at Celta. La lIga outfit are keen to extend the winning patch, but will have plenty of lessons to learn from their last season’s meeting with the same rival. PSV and Atletico Madrid met in the last 16 round with Diego Simeone’s men progressing through after penalties following a goalless two-legged tie.
Highligted Player (Luuk de Jong):
The 26-year-old Dutch striker Luuk de Jong is considered one of Europe’s deadliest strikers with his incredible return of goals in games he spends playing. Luuk de Jong began his football career at De Graafschap in 2008, but moved on to Twente only a year later. The tally of 39 goals in 76 league appearances earned him a transfer to Borussia Monchengladbach, but his spell in Germany ended in disappointment. Bundesliga club attempted to revive his career by sending him out on loan to Newcastle United but his stint with the English club yielded even more disappointment and concluded in utter disaster with De Jong playing 12 games without scoring a single goal for the Magpies. A return to Netherlands and PSV Eindhoven turned out to be a proper hit for the 26-year-old striker who has restored his scoring touch with more than 50 goals for the Boeren after less than 90 games.
Highlighted Team (Atletico Madrid):
Atletico Madrid are a Spanish team that plays in Primera Division (La Liga). Los Rojiblancos or los Colchoneros play their home matches at Estadio Vicente Calderon, which holds up to 54,960 spectators. Atletico Madrid have won 10 La Liga titles, but they have yet to lift the European Cup (Champions League) trophy. Los Rojblancos have won 10 Copa del Rey (Spanish Cup) trophies and it has to be noted that they defeated their bitter local rivals Real Madrid in the 2012/2013 Spanish Cup final. The rivalry between the two capital clubs is pretty big and El Madrileno is regarded as one of the most exciting derbies in the world football. Atletico Madrid played two Champions League finals under Diego Simeone, but they failed to beat Real Madrid in the title games (2013/2014 and 2015/2016). However, the Argentine tactician helped Atletico Madrid win the La Liga trophy in 2014 and, no doubt, he is one of the most successful coaches in the history of the capital club.
