Our prediction for this MLS match:
Sunday’s football game at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park pits together Colorado Rapids and Portland Timbers, the two teams who recorded different results in the 2018 season. Portland Timbers did remarkably well to make it to the MLS Cup, but Atlanta United eventually proved to be a big catch for them in the title game. The Timbers aim to go all the way in the Major League Soccer this term, but that is easier said than done. Colorado, on the other hand, failed to impress in the 2018 season, with the team finishing the process in 11th place in the Western Conference. The Rapids aim to make amends for the unsuccessful campaign, but, no doubt, they would be happy with one point from their opener against the last season’s runners-up. You should bear in mind, though, that Portland emerged triumphant in each of their last three meetings in MLS.
Highlighted Player (Tim Howard):
Tim Howard is considered one of the best goalkeepers in the history of USA national football team. Howard is well known for his spell with English giants Manchester United. The experienced shoot-stopper played for the Red Devils from 2003 to 2007 and he spent the 2006/2007 season on loan at Everton. At the end of the season he signed a permanent deal with the Goodison Park outfit and it has to be noted that he made no less than 354 league appearances for the Toffees. During the 2011/2012 Premier League campaign he scored his first and only goal for Everton as he found the net in a 2-1 loss to Bolton Wanderers. Thanks to the goal against Bolton he became the fourth goalkeeper to score a Premier League game. In 2016 he decided to return to USA, signing a three-and-a-half-year deal with Colorado Rapids. Howard conceded 20 goals in 19 appearances for the Rapids in the 2016 MLS season and he managed to keep eight clean sheets. It is well known that the USA goalkeeper won the 2007 CONCACAF Gold Cup with the Yanks.
Highlighted Team (Portland Timbers):
Founded in 2009, Portland Timbers is a soccer club based in Portland, Oregon. The Timbers are well known for their green kit and their secondary colours are red and black. Portland welcome their opponents at Providence Park and the capacity of their home ground is 21.144.
The club hold a long-running rivalry with Seattle Sounders as the two clubs used to face each other in the North American Soccer League. In 2015 Portland Timbers did remarkably well to win the MLS Cup and that is considered the club’s biggest success.
The Timbers defeated Columbus Crew in the final of the tournament and it has to be noted that the title game was hosted by Mapfre Stadium (Columbus).
Former Premier League footballer Liam Ridgewell played for Portland in the 2015 MLS Cup final against Columbus Crew. Speaking of the club’s supporters, you should have in mind that the Timbers sold out almost every home game in the MLS. Portland’s main supporters group is the Timbers Army.
