Our football match prediction:
New York Red Bulls will be looking to kick off the new MLS campaign with a win when they take on Red Bull Arena on Sunday. The club chiefs did well to keep hold of key player Bradley Wright-Phillips in the winter and all eyes will be on the experience attacker when the Red Bulls take on the Timbers in the opening match of the season. Giovanni Savarese's men did well to make it to the Western Conference semis last term, but they certainly want to go all the way in the MLS Cup this season. However, seeing that Portland struggled on the travels in the 2017 MLS campaign, we are tempted to put our money on Jesse Marsch's charges. When the two teams met in a friendly in February Portland outclassed New York Red Bulls 4-1, meaning that the hosts are hungry for revenge. Taking everything into account, we predict that the Metros are going to pick up all three points from Sunday's football match.
Highlighted Player (Felipe):
Felipe Campanholi Martins is a Brazilian footballer who was born on September 30, 1990 in Engenheiro Beltrao. After playing for the likes of PSTC-Londrina, Atletico Catarinense and Campo Grande during his youth career, he started his senior career at Padova. The Brazilian midfielder appeared in no more than four league matches for the Italian club and in 2009 he moved to Switzerland, signing a deal with FC Winterthur. At the end of the season he joined fellow Swiss Super League club Lugano and he quickly established himself as a first-team regular. In the winter of 2011 Felipe moved to MLS, signing a deal with expansion team Montreal Impact. He scored his first MLS goal in a 2-0 win over Sporting Kansas City on May 5, 2012 and he has been playing an important role in the team ever since. Felipe has yet to represent Brazil at senior level, but he could play for Canada national team in the future as he applied for permanent residency.
Highlighted Team (Portland Timbers):
Founded in 2009, Portland Timbers are a soccer club based in Portland, Oregon. The Timbers are well known for their green kit and their secondary colours are red and black. Portland welcome their opponents at Providence Park and the capacity of their home ground is 21.144. The club hold a long-running rivalry with Seattle Sounders as the two clubs used to face each other in the North American Soccer League. In 2015 Portland Timbers did remarkably well to win the MLS Cup and that is considered the club’s biggest success. The Timbers defeated Columbus Crew in the final of the tournament and it has to be noted that the title game was hosted by Mapfre Stadium (Columbus). Former Premier League footballer Liam Ridgewell played for Portland in the 2015 MLS Cup final against Columbus Crew. Speaking of the club’s supporters, you should have in mind that the Timbers sold out almost every home game in the MLS. Portland’s main supporters group is the Timbers Army.
