Our prediction for this Primera Division match:
San Mames Barria will host Sunday’s football match between Athletic Club and Deportivo Alaves. Athletic Club did well to beat Real Betis in their last league match, but they are still sitting in the bottom half of the La Liga standings. The Lions are eyeing a place in European competitions and a win over Deportivo Alaves will see them climb to top ten in the table. Unlike previous seasons, Athletic have been struggling at their San Mames Barria this season and it has to be noted that they are on a four-game winless run at home ground. Alaves, on the other hand, have been in a fine form of late as they recorded three wins in previous four league matches. El Glorioso are high on confidence ahead of the Basque derby and we predict that they are going to grab something from the match. A close encounter is on the cards and we believe the two teams are going to play out a low-scoring draw on Matchday 18.
Highlighted Player (Aritz Aduriz):
Aritz Aduriz is another Spanish footballer that can be placed in the late bloomers category, having played his best football after the age of 30. The cultured striker has spent his entire career in native Spain, and he was showing promise from the moment he first tasted senior football. The Basque forward arrived at Athletic Bilbao via Aurrera and Bilbao Athletic, but the first spell at San Mames proved quite disappointing and he went on to kick-start his career at Real Valladolid. Aduriz later returned to Athletic Bilbao to score 22 goals in 82 league outings, and then represented Mallorca and Valencia before returning for the third spell. Little did he know that it would prove to be the most successful stint of his career, with the forward producing some amazing displays in La Liga and Europa League, scoring over 95 goals in first four years upon rejoining los Leones. That proved enough for the striker to end a six-year exile from the national team as Aduriz featured in March 2016 friendlies vs Italy and Romania, scoring on his return against the Azzurri to prove age should not matter when the quality is there.
Highlighted Team (Alaves):
Alaves are a Spanish football club located in Vitoria-Gasteiz, Alava. The club were founded in 1921 and they play their home games at Estadio Mendizorrotza. The capacity of the stadium is 19,840 and it has to be noted that it is the third oldest stadium in Spanish football. After spending several years in the Spanish Segunda Division, los Babazorros returned to the top flight in 2016. The colour of Alaves’ home kit is blue and white and the club’s local rivals are fellow Basque sides Real Sociedad, Athletic Club, Osasuna and Eibar. Alaves made it to the UEFA CUP final in 2001, but they were beaten by Liverpool 5-4 in a thrilling football clash. Anyhow, that is still regarded as the club’s biggest success. Los Babazorros booked their place in the Copa del Rey quarter-finals on four occasions and they have yet to win the Primera Division trophy.
