Our football match prediction:
Diego SImeone’s men have seemingly put the poor start to the new season behind them. Having been halted to back-to-back stalemates against lowly Alaves and Leganes, Atletico Madrid got back to winning ways with consecutive victories at Celta Vigo and PSV Eindhoven in La Liga and UEFA Champions League, respectively. Atletico’s bid for the third Champions League final in four years began with a win courtesy of Saul Niguez’s acrobatic strike just before half-time at the Philips Stadion. A valuable away win will have been a huge boost for Los Colchoneros, who will be keen on extending the streak against Sporting Gijon. Unbeaten in their first three games in new La Liga season, Rojiblancos will have to be taken quite seriously though. Abelardo Fernandez’s men managed to beat Athletic Bilbao in the season opener, but were held to a goalless draw at Alaves in the second round. Sporting however returned to winning ways with a 2-1 triumph over Leganes, but the trip to Vicente Calderon might mark their first defeat in the campaign. We predict a clear-cut victory for the home side.
Highlighted Player (Antoine Griezmann):
Antoine Griezmann is a French forward born on 21st March 1991 in Macon, and he is widely regarded as one of Europe’s most exciting footballers at the moment. The pacey striker started showing his potential shortly after coming through Real Sociedad’s youth academy and he went on to score 46 goals in 179 league appearances for La Real. Excellent displays in Spanish la Liga saw him become a target for a number of top clubs, but he eventually choose to sign for Atletico Madrid, and that proved to be a very good decision. Griezmann continued the rich vein of form at Vicente Calderon, scoring some important goals as los Colchoneros enjoyed domestic and European success, while also becoming a key member of the France national team. Playing as a winger or second striker, Griezmann possesses impressive technical skills, he is a strong finisher and still finds time to work hard for his side, so no wonder he is widely regarded as one of the leading forwards on the continent. He won the Under-19 European Championship with France and is tipped to lead Les Bleus to glory on senior level as well.
Highlighted Team (Sporting Gijon):
Sporting Gijon are a Spanish football club that competes in La Liga. Sporting Gijon’s home ground is El Molinon, the stadium that was built in 1908. El Molinon is the oldest football field in Spain and the capacity of the stadium is 30,000. Sporting Gijon’s home kit is red and white and the club’s main rivals are Real Oviedo. The two teams take on each other in the Asturian derby. Sporting Gijon did remarkably well to finish the 1978/1979 La Liga campaign in second position in the standings and that is considered the club’s biggest success. Los Rojiblancos were runners-up in Spanish Copa del Rey in 1981 and 1982, but they have yet to win the Spanish Cup. The club was founded in 1905 and the club’s original name was Sporting Gijones. Sporting Gijon participated in the UEFA Cup on six occasions, but they did not record a good result in the European competition.
