Our prediction for this Europa League match:
Europa-Park Stadion will host Thursday’s Europa League game between Freiburg and Olympiakos, the two teams who sit in the opposite halves of the table. Freiburg aim to keep their 100% record intact, and they must be high on spirits following a 2-0 win over Werder Bremen. All Sallai, Gulde, Ezekwem, and Schmid should miss out with injuries, while Ghana midfielder Daniel-Kofi Kyereh is back after missing the Nantes game.
The Thrylos, on the other hand, are not enjoying a season to remember, with the team collecting only one point in total from the previous four league fixtures. Olympiakos were outclassed by Freiburg (0-3) earlier in the process, and we do not believe that they are capable of grabbing something from the Europa-Park Stadion clash. Both Youssef El Arabi and James Rodriguez are back to contention after missing the last group game.
Highlighted Player (Nils Petersen):
Son to a football coach, Andreas, the Freiburg striker Nils Petersen is a physical forward best known for his clinical finishing. A former Bayern Munich striker never got a chance to prove his worth with Bundesliga giants and had to take a long road to prominence which included loan spells at Werder Bremen and Freiburg, before penning a permanent deal with Die Breisaguer in 2015.
Petersen’s impressive exploits during the 2017/18 season helped him get into Germany’s provisional FIFA World Cup 2018 squad although his father Andreas would argue it was his personal influence that helped Joachim Loew write his son’s name in the 23-man list. Namely, Andres Piteresen spotted the Germany manager on a beach in January and decided to ask him about his son’s chances of making it into Germany World Cup squad.
Piteresen was rewarded with his senior Germany cap in an Austria friendly but unfortunately for his father missed out on the final squad for the tournament in Russia.
Highlighted Team (Olympiacos):
Olympiakos are regarded as one of the biggest club in Greece. The Thrylos were founded back in 1925 and they play their home games at Georgios Karaiskakis Stadium in Piraeus. The capacity of the stadium is 33 296. In 2016 Olympiakos won their 43rd Greek Superleague trophy and it has to be noted that they clinched their sixth consecutive domestic title.
However, the club’s biggest success came in 1999 as they participated in the Champions League quarter-finals. The Red and whites were beaten by Juventus in the two-legged tie. It is well known that Panathinaikos are considered the club’s bitterest rivals and the two teams share a great and long-standing rivalry.
The likes of AEK and PAOK are regarded as Olympiakos’ fierce opponents as well. The likes of Javier Saviola, Kevin Mirallas, Darko Kovacevic, Lomana LuaLua, Joel Campbell, Rivaldo and Marko Pantelic are notable footballers who played for the club in the past. Olympiakos fans are friends with Red Star Belgrade supporters.
