UEFA Nations League Predictions by FootballPredictions.com
The UEFA Nations League is an international football competition contested by men's senior national teams in the Union of European Football Associations.
The idea behind this newly-introduced contest is to produce more significant matches and introduce the high level of competition into the international friendly matches which are perceived as largely uncompetitive.
The Nations League transpires once every two years and starts after a major summer tournament (European Championship or the World Cup).
Nations League Groups and Tournament Set up
The UEFA Nations League is composed of four leagues. The 55 participating nations are separated into four leagues, either A, B, C or D. Who gets placed where depends on their UEFA coefficient rankings. The numbers are based on a national team’s international football performances.
After the draw has taken place, each league is then separated into four additional groups. The groups contain three or four teams who must play each other home and away between September and November. In League D’s groups, the winner of each group is promoted to League C.
Consequently, in other groups, the League winners are promoted to a higher division and the bottom-placed sides are relegated into the lower one. Once the cycle is done, the winner of each group earns a place in the UEFA Nations League Finals.
After the UEFA Nations League group stage has taken place in the autumn, there is a break until the next summer. It is in June of the next year that UEFA Nations League Finals takes place. When you look at it that way, it is a rather simple tournament between teams who have won their League A groups.
Nations League Tips, Predictions and Betting Advice
There are two main things that this new qualifying format brings. For starters, at least one team from every division in the Nations League is guaranteed a spot at the European Championship. That indicates that one of the four League D group winners, which are among the worst teams in Europe, will be playing at the finals.
This format also makes it look almost impossible for League A teams to fail to make it to the finals. Should any of those 12 teams fail to qualify, they are very likely to go into the playoffs because most other League A teams have already secured their slot in the competition.
It is plausible for the remaining League A playoff positions to end up being passed down to League B teams.
