Our prediction for this Champions League match:
PSV and Sporting CP go head to head at Philips Stadion in what is expected to be an interesting Champions League game. PSV have been impressive in the new Eredivisie campaign, but they produced an under-par performance in a 3-1 loss to Juventus in their Champions League opener. Joey Veerman should be fit for Tuesday’s clash despite suffering an injury in a 2-0 win over Willem II at the weekend, while Mexico winger Hirving Lozano is a major doubt.
The Lions, on the other hand, are on an eight-game winning run in all competitions. Given Sporting CP’s attacking potential with Sweden ace Viktor Gyokeres up front, we believe that there is a big value in betting on both teams to score. Defender Jerry St. Juste remains in the recovery room, while both Marcus Edwards and Pedro Goncalves are major doubts. Midfielder Daniel Braganca should be recalled to the starting XI following his fine performance in a 3-0 win over Estoril.
Highlighted Player (Luuk de Jong):
The 26-year-old Dutch striker Luuk de Jong is considered one of Europe’s deadliest strikers with his incredible return of goals in games he spends playing. Luuk de Jong began his football career at De Graafschap in 2008, but moved on to Twente only a year later.
The tally of 39 goals in 76 league appearances earned him a transfer to Borussia Monchengladbach, but his spell in Germany ended in disappointment. Bundesliga club attempted to revive his career by sending him out on loan to Newcastle United but his stint with the English club yielded even more disappointment and concluded in utter disaster with De Jong playing 12 games without scoring a single goal for the Magpies.
A return to Netherlands and PSV Eindhoven turned out to be a proper hit for the 26-year-old striker who has restored his scoring touch with more than 50 goals for the Boeren after less than 90 games.
Highlighted Team (Sporting):
When it comes to official club members, Portugal giants Sporting Lisbon are the sixth club in the world. Commonly referred to as Leoes which is Portuguese for Lions, Sporting Lisbon were founded in 1906 and are one of the founders of the Primeira Liga.
Sporting’s main rivals are Benfica, with both teams contesting the Lisbon Derby, one of the most fierce ones in Europe. Lions play their games at Estadio Jose Alvelade in front of 50,000 people and are the third most successful club in the country with 46 titles in Portuguese competitions and a title in the European Cup Winner’s Cup from 1963-64.
During this time that is also known as the club’s golden years, Sporting Lisbon won the majority of their 18 Primeira Liga titles in total. Sporting Lisbon boasts the quality football youth academy system which has yielded world-class footballers such as Paulo Furte, Simao Sabrosa, Nani and Ballon d’Or winners Figo and Cristiano Ronaldo.
