Our prediction for this Champions League match:
Veltins Arena will be the centre of attention when Shakhtar Donetsk take on Bayern Munich in the Champions League round 6. As the game will be played in Germany, Bayern Munich fans will pack the stadium and, as a result, the Bundesliga leaders are seen as hot favourites to beat the Miners. Jama Musiala is widely expected to return to the starting XI after coming as a substitute in a 4-2 win over Heidenheim, with Leon Goretzka pushing for a start as well.
Top scorer Harry Kane remains on the sidelines with injury alongside Alphonso Davies, Manuel Neuer, Joao Palhinha, and Kingsley Coman. Shakhtar Donetsk, on the other hand, do not seem to be competitive at this level, with the team collecting only four points in total from possible 15 and seeing that the game will be played on a neutral location, away win should be considered. To make things even worse for the home side, defender Pedrinho is banned for the match.
Highlighted Player (Harry Kane):
Widely regarded as one of England’s best strikers at the moment, Harry Kane enjoyed a meteoric rise at Tottenham Hotspur, scoring 21 Premier League goals during the 2014/2015 campaign to be voted PFA Young Player of the Year.
The highly rated striker went on to surpass that achievement the following season as he helped Tottenham Hotspur mount a serious title challenge for the first time in club’s recent history and he made seamless transition to international football. Kane scored four goals in his first ten appearances for England to prove he was here to stay and at the same time established himself as a first choice striker in Roy Hodgson’s squad ahead of the Euro 2016 finals.
Kane is a modern striker, who is extremely dangerous in the opposition box, but it was some outstanding goals from distance as well as link-up play with teammates that earned him an excellent reputation in world football. Kane is expected to lead both Tottenham and England in years to come, that is if he can resist the lure of top European clubs that continue to cast admiring glances his way.
Highlighted Team (Shakhtar Donetsk):
Despite the fact that they were founded back in 1936, Shakhtar Donetsk were struggling to win the Ukrainian Premier League trophy until 2002. The Miners have established themselves as the dominant force in Ukrainian football and it has to be noted that they won their ninth domestic trophy in 2014.
Shakhtar Donetsk were playing at Donbass Arena in the past, but due to war in Donbass the club temporarily moved to Arena Lviv. In 2009 the Miners won the UEFA Cup trophy under Romanian boss Mircea Lucescu, beating Werder Bremen in the title game. Croatian full back Dario Srna was named the man of the match. Dynamo Kiev are considered Shakhtar Donetsk’s main rivals and there have always been fireworks in meetings between the two sides.
Shakhtar have a rivalry with Metalurh Donetsk as well and the two local rivals face each other in the Donetsk Derby. Chelsea ace Willian, Manchester United star Mkhitaryan and Manchester City midfielder Fernandinho all played for Shakhtar in the past.
