Our prediction for this World Cup 2026 match:
Serbia will be aiming to cement top position in Group A when they take on Azerbaijan on Tuesday evening. The Eagles showed character in their second group game, with the team coming from two goals behind to share the spoils with star-studded Portugal. New boss Dragan Stojkovic is doing a great job with the Serbian national team, and even though defender Nikola Milenkovic is banned for the Olympic Stadium clash, away win should be considered.
A man to keep an eye on in the away team will be Fulham attacker Aleksandar Mitrovic, who has become Serbia’s all-time top scorer. Azerbaijan kicked off their World Cup qualifying campaign with a 1-0 loss to Portugal, and given their display in a 2-1 loss to Qatar at the weekend, anything but a routine win would be a major surprise. In the previous meeting between the two national teams Serbia outplayed Azerbaijan 4-1.
Highlighted Player (Nemanja Matic):
Nemanja Matic is a Serbian footballer who plays for Premier League side Chelsea. The 194-cm-tall midfielder was born on 1 August, 1988 and he began his football career (youth) at Radnicki Obrenovac.
In 2005 he signed for Kolubara and after impressing with Kosice in the 2008/2009 campaign, Chelsea owners decided to sign him. Nemanja spent the 2010/2011 season on loan at Vitesse and at the end of the season he signed a deal with Portuguese giants Benfica, with David Luiz heading in the other direction.
Matic was in the form of his life in the 2013/2014 Primeira Liga campaign and he helped the Eagles clinch the domestic trophy. He rejoined Chelsea in 2014 for a fee of €25M and he helped the Blues win the Premier League title in the 2014/2015 season. Nemanja Matic has also developed into a key member of the Serbian national team that have been largely struggling of late.
Highlighted Team (Serbia):
Serbia have been playing as an independent nation since 2006. The Serbs made it to the 2010 FIFA World Cup finals and despite defeating star-studded Germany in the group stages of the showpiece tournament in South Africa, they eventually failed to book their place in the last 16. The Eagles, though, failed to qualify for the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil as they experienced all sorts of problems in their qualifying group.
A number of top-class footballers played for Serbia and former Manchester United defender Nemanja Vidic is regarded as one of the best players in the history of the Serbian national team. Vidic scored two goals in 56 appearances for Serbia and he announced his retirement from the national team on 24 October, 2011.
The Eagles play their home game at Stadion Rajko Mitic and it has to be noted that they defeated Czech Republic 3-1 in their first international game under the name of Serbia. Serbia play their home games in red shirts and red shorts, while the colour of their away kit is white.
