Our prediction for this World Cup 2026 match:
All eyes will be on Benjamin Mkapa National Stadium when Tanzania and D.R. Congo face each other in the Group J derby. Tanzania aim to retain top position in the standings, and they are likely to go all guns blazing at D.R. Congo in Thursday’s qualifier. The likes of Aishi Manula, Mbwana Samatta, and Simon Msuva will be the men to watch in the home team.
The Leopards, on the other hand, aim to bounce back from a shocking 1-0 loss to Madagascar. Congo D.R. boss Hector Cuper should continue to rely on attacking duo Bakambu – Mbokani, while Bolasie returns to the squad. The good news for the visitors is that Porto defender Mbemba has overcome his injury. Anyhow, a close encounter is on the cards at Benjamin Mkapa National Stadium, and we are tempted to put our money on draw.
Highlighted Player (Mbwana Samatta):
Born in Dar Es Salaam on December 23, 1992, Mbwana Samatta is a Tanzania striker who plays for Genk in the Belgian Jupiler League. Samatta began his youth career at African Lyon and he played his first game at senior level for Simba SC, the club from his homeland.
In 2011 he moved to TP Mazembe and after scoring 60 goals in 103 league games for the club, the Tanzania international signed a four-and-a-half-year deal with Genk. On August 23, 2018 Samatta scored a hat-trick against Brondby in the Europa League.
Speaking of his international debut, Samatta made his Tanzania debut in March, 2011 in a 2-1 win over Central African Republic. It has to be noted that the Genk attacker was named African Player of the Year (based in Africa) in 2015. His main position is centre-forward, but is capable of playing as a winger as well. His contract with Genk should expire on June 30, 2020.
Highlighted Team (DR Congo):
Democratic Republic of Congo made no more than one appearances at the World Cup finals. DR Congo qualified for the major tournament in 1974 and they were playing under the name of Zaire back then. Zaire failed to impress at the showpiece tournament in West Germany as they were beaten by the likes of Scotland, Brazil and Yugoslavia in the group stages.
The Leopards suffered a heavy 9-0 loss to Yugoslavia in Gelsenkirchen and that is considered the team’s biggest defeat. DR Congo (Zaire) won two African Cup of Nations titles, with the team lifting the prestigious trophies in 1968 and 1974.
It has to be noted that the team won the bronze medal at both the 1998 and the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations. DR Congo play their home games in sky-blue shirts with red sleeves, while the colour of their away kit is white. Dieumerci Mbokani is the team’s most notable player.
