Honduras
Costa Rica will be aiming to make amends for a 1-0 loss to Canada when they take on Honduras at Estadio Nacional de Costa Rica on Tuesday morning. Los Ticos are five points behind the playoffs place, meaning that this has to go down as a must-win game for the home side. Veteran midfielder Bryan Ruiz is pushing for a start, while PSG goalkeeper Keylor Navas remains on the sidelines through injury. Jose Guilermo Ortiz is widely expected to lead the line for the hosts.
Los Catrachos, on the other hand, have yet to record a win in the 2022 World Cup qualifiers. The rock-bottom side are on a three-game losing run ahead of the trip to San Jose, and given their shaky defence, we believe that there is a big value in betting on Joel Campbell and Co. Cadiz forward Anthony Lozano is a major doubt, and he will be assessed ahead of the kick-off.
Highlighted Player (Keylor Navas):
Keylor Navas is an exceptionally gifted goal keeper who plays for Spanish club Real Madrid and the Costa Rica national team. The 29-year-old rose through the youth ranks at Saprissa before making his professional bow with them in 2005.
After a successful stint with them, he ventured into Spanish football with a move to Albacete and then to Levante. His exploits at Levante earned him a move to Real Madrid where he quickly established as a first-team regular. Despite coming within seconds of moving away from the club to accommodate David de Gea, Navas became a crowd favorite with outstanding displays in 2015-16 season.
Navas has played over 60 games for Costa Rica having made his debut in 2008. He has represented them at the 2014 FIFA World Cup where Costa Rica were a losing quarter-finalists. Their progress in the tournament is largely attributed to the success of Navas under the sticks.
Highlighted Team (Honduras):
Honduras are a national football team from Central America that qualified for the World Cup finals for the first time in 1982. Los Catrachos did well to share the spoils with hosts Spain at the showpiece tournament, but they eventually failed to book their place in the knockout stages.
Honduras participated at the 2010 and the 2014 FIFA World Cup finals as well, but they failed to impress at the tournaments in South Africa and Brazil. Winning of the 1981 CONCACAF Championship is undisputedly the team’s biggest success and it has to be noted that they finished the final round in top position in the standings, two points clear of El Salvador and three above Mexico.
Los Catrachos were beaten by Canada in the 1985 Gold Cup final, with the team finishing the 1991 tournament as runners-up as well. Wilson Palacios, who used to play for the likes of Tottenham Hotspur and Stoke City as regarded as one of the most notable footballers who represented Honduras national team on the international stage.
