Our prediction for this League 1 match:
There will be fireworks when Sunderland and Portsmouth face each other at Stadium of Light in a highly-anticipated League One derby. The Black Cats are determined to return to the Championship, but they need to find their best form as soon as possible if they are to secure a top-two finish. Ireland international Aiden O’Brien is pushing for a start, while both Corry Evans and Carl Winchester are major doubts.
Since all Aiden McGeady, Denver Hume, Luke O’Nien, Nathan Broadhead, and Niall Huggins have been struggling with injuries of late, home win should not be considered. The Pompey, on the other hand, aim to put an end to their three-game winless run in the League One. Portsmouth, though, are not regarded as good travelers, which is probably the main reason why we are tempted to put our money on draw. January signing Tayler Walker should keep his place in starting XI.
Highlighted Player (Corry Evans):
After starting his youth career at Greenisland Boys, Corry Evans joined Manchester United at the age of 15. However, despite being a part of the senior squad from 2009 to 2011, he did not play for the Red Devils in the Premier League.
In October, 2010 he joined Carlisle United on a one-month loan deal and one year later he signed a loan deal with Hull City. After scoring three goals in 18 appearances for the Tigers, the midfielder signed a permanent contract with the club in the summer of 2011. Corry Evans established himself as a first-team regular at Hull City, but in 2013 he moved to Blackburn Rovers. He has been playing for the Riversiders ever since, wearing No. 29 jersey.
Evans’ main position is central midfield, but he is often used as both defensive and a right midfielder. Corry Evans was born in Belfast, Northern Ireland on July 30, 1990. He made his debut for the Northern Ireland national team in June, 2009 against Italy.
Highlighted Team (Portsmouth):
During Milan Mandaric’s era at the club, Portsmouth played an important role in the Premier League, with the team finishing their debut season (2003/2004) in the 13th position in the standings. The club impressed in the 2008/2009 season, with Nwankwo Kanu’s goal helping them beat Cardiff City in the FA Cup final.
As a result, Portsmouth represented England in the Europa League, with the team progressing in the group stages of the competition thanks to a win over Vitoria Gimaraes in the final qualifying round. The current club was formed in 2013, but the original amateur club was founded back in 1883. Nowadays Portsmouth host their rivals at Fratton Park, with the venue holding up to 20,620 spectators.
The likes of Sol Campbell, David James, Glen Johnson and aforementioned Nigeria international Nwankwo Kanu are considered one of the club’s most notable players. Portsmouth wear blue shirts, white shorts and red socks when hosting their rivals at Fratton Park, while wearing white and blue colours when playing on the road.
