Our prediction for this Ligue 1 match:
Saint Etienne were not in action at the weekend as their game against Olympique Marseille was cancelled after several OM footballers were tested positive for coronavirus. Les Verts can’t wait for the season to begin, and they are likely to go all guns blazing at Lorient in their opener. Les Merlus, on the other hand, obviously aim to impress on their return to the Ligue 1.
The newcomers rolled over Strasbourg 3-1 on Matchday 1, and, no doubt, they are brimming with confidence ahead of the trip to Auvergne-Rhone-Alpes. Lorient aim to give fans yet another reason for celebration, and seeing that St Etienne are likely to go for a win as well, we are tempted to put our money on both teams to score. You should bear in mind that nine goals in total have been netted in last three meetings between the two teams.
Highlighted Player (Yann M Vila):
Formerly a blistering talent and one of the most promising youngsters in French football, Yann M’Vila ended up being a class book example of a player who made all the wrong choices. Having started his career at the age of six with ES Sains-Saint-Fussein, M’Villa was quick to turn heads of the big boys. He was given a chance to move through youth ranks at Rennes where he was given a professional debut in 2009 but it was not long after that his problematic lifestyle came back to haunt him.
Yann M’Villa got suspended from all national teams after an unauthorized night out while on U21 duty with France, a ban which left mark on his club career as well. Despite interest from the likes of Arsenal and Tottenham, M’Villa was sold to Rubin kazan in January 2013 which was the time his nomadic experience as a footballer began.
Spells as Inter Milan and Sunderland failed to help him get back to prominence and meet the early expectations, however. Currently a St Etienne player, M’Villa is hoping to re-establish himself back in his homeland.
Highlighted Team (St Etienne):
Saint Etienne are a professional football club that compete in French Ligue 1. Les Verts were founded in 1919 by employees of a grocery store chain based in Saint Etienne. Saint Etienne wear green shirts and white shorts when playing at home ground and they play their home matches at Stade Geoffroy-Guichard.
The stadium was opener on 13 September, 1931 and following the renovation the capacity of the venue increased to 42 000. In 1981 les Verts won their tenth Ligue 1 trophy, but they have been in the shadow of Ligue 1 giants Lyon and PSG in the 21st century.
Speaking of the club’s European success, Saint Etienne made it to the European Cup (Champions League) final in 1976, but Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich proved to be a big catch for the French outfit. Anyhow, that is regarded as the club’s biggest success. It has to be noted that the likes of Michel Platini, Jacques Santini, Laurent Blanc and Aime Jacquet all played for Saint Etienne in the past.
