El Salvador
Mexico will be aiming to clinch top position in Group A when thez take on El Salvador at Cotton Bowl on Monday morning. El Tri failed to impress in a goalless draw with Trinidad, but they faced no difficulties in a 3-0 win over Guatemala in their second group game. Even though star attacker Hirving Lozano remains on the sidelines with injuries, the Gold Cup title holders are seen as favourites to beat El Salvador.
In Lozano’s absence, Monterrey attacker Funes Mori, who scored a brace in the triumph over Guatemala, will be the man to watch in the home team. La Azul y Blanco aim to keep their 100% record at the 2021 Gold Cup intact, but Mexico will pose a much bigger threat for the nominal visitors than their previous rivals. Walmer Martinez is pushing for a start after finding the net in the victory over Trinidad.
Highlighted Player (Jonathan dos Santos):
While playing at a youth tournament in France, Jonathan Dos Santos was spotted by FC Barcelona scouts, who were delighted with what they saw. The Barca chiefs decided to bring Jonathan and his brother Giovani to La Masia, with both passing the trial.
The Mexican midfielder, who was born in Monterrey on April 26, 1990, scored 6 goals in 81 appearances for Barcelona B from 2009 to 2012, but he played no more than 14 games for the senior team in the Spanish top flight. On July 9, 2014 Jonathan dos Santos moved to Villareal and he scored his first La Liga goal in December against Deportivo La Coruna.
The Mexico international played an important role at Villarreal until 2017 when he decided to sign a contract with MLS club Los Angeles Galaxy. The biggest success of his career, though, is winning the UEFA Champions League title in the 2010/2011 season with Barca. Unlike his brother, Jonathan’s preferred foot is right.

El Salvador are a national football team that play their home games at Estadio Cuscatlan. La Azul y Blanco turned down an invitation from Brazil to take part in the 1950 World Cup finals, but in 1970 they made it to the finals of the showpiece tournament in Mexico 20 years later.
They participated at the 1982 World Cup finals as well, but they have yet to advance the first round of the finals competition. El Salvador hosted the first CONCACAF Championship, but they failed to win the trophy, with the team suffering a loss to Costa Rica in the title game. Speaking of the Central American and Carribean Games, la Selecta won the trophy on two occasions (1954, 2002) and in 1968 they booked their place at the Olympic Games in Mexico.
