Our prediction for this World Cup 2026 match:
Buoyed by the Copa America triumph, Argentina will be looking to give fans yet another reason for celebration when they take on Venezuela in the 2022 World Cup qualifier on Friday morning. La Albiceleste proved their worth at the Copa America, with new PSG signing Leo Messi finally winning the title at the major tournament. Since Argentina are brimming with confidence ahead of the trip to San Cristobal, away win should be considered.
The good news for the visitors is that all Dibu Martinez, Lo Celso, Romero, and Buendia joined the squad despite the Premier League ban. Both Sergio Aguero and Agustin Marchesin are sidelined with injuries, while Juan Foyth and Paulo Dybala return to the squad. La Vinotinto, on the other hand, have already suffered four defeats in the process, and they are unlikely to upset the Copa America winners. The good news for the hosts is that key attacker Salomon Rondon returns to contention. Both Tomas Rincon and Darwin Marchis have been left out of the squad.
Highlighted Player (Josef Martinez):
Josef Martinez started his senior career at Caracas, but he made no more than 36 league appearances for the Venezuelan outfit from 2010 to 2012. Martinez then moved to Europe and the 170-cm tall striker scored 4 goals in 34 appearances for the capital club. In the 2013/2014 season he played for fellow Swiss outfit Thun (on loan) and on June 7, 2014 he signed a contract with Serie A team Torino.
In December, 2017 Josef Martinez scored his first ever goal in the Italian top flight in a 2-2 draw with Palermo. The Venezuela international currently plays (on loan) for Atlanta United in MLS and he made his debut for Gerardo Martino’s team against New York Red Bulls. Speaking of his international career, Martinez made his Venezuela debut against El Salvador, coming from the bench after 76 minutes.
On November 10, 2016 he scored a hat-trick for La Vinotinto in a thrilling 5-0 victory over Bolivia and it has to be noted that he has four caps (two goals) for Venezuela U20 team.
Highlighted Team (Argentina):
Members of the CONMEBOL confederation Argentina national team are headed by coach Gerardo Martino and are considered one of the most nations in footballing world. Renowned for their attacking powers and defensive discipline Argentina have been playing their international matches since 1901 and their first ever competitive victory over Uruguay 3-2.
Commonly referred to as La Seleccion, Argentina are top of the FIFA World ranking, but their most recent records have been below par with the team last winning a major trophy in 1993. Two-time World Cup winners have lost the 2014 final to Germany coming agonizingly close to the crown they last won in 1986. Javier Zanetti is the most capped player with 143 matches to his name while Javier Mascherano and Lionel Messi with 124 and 108 respectively are the current team members with most games to their name.
Barcelona star Lionel Messi is six goals short behind Gabriel Batistuta who is the team’s top scorer with 56 goals he scored playing for La Seleccion from 1991 to 2002.
