Our prediction for this EFL Cup match:
Liverpool and Derby County face each other in a David-vs-Goliath clash at Anfield in the EFL Cup last 32. The Reds did well to beat Spurs at the weekend, with the team keeping their Premier League hopes alive, and they must be brimming with confidence ahead of Wednesday’s clash. It is well known that Jurgen Klopp rests key players in the EFL Cup, meaning that all Jones, Oxlade-Chamberlain, Gomez, Carvalho, Ramsay, and Tsimikas could earn a spot in the starting XI.
The likes of Arthur, Luis Diaz, Diogo Jota, Naby Keita, and Joel Matip remain in the recovery room. The Rams, on the other hand, are not regarded as good travellers, and regardless of which players will be deployed in Liverpool’s starting XI, home win should be considered. All Curtis Davies, Jason Knight, and James Chester miss out with injuries for the away side, while Richard Stearman is likely to replace suspended defender Eiran Cashin in the starting line-up.
Highlighted Player (Mohamed Salah):
Mohamed Salah is considered one of the best African players. Salah began his senior career at El Mokawloon, scoring 11 goals in 41 league appearances for the club and in 2012 he moved to Europe, signing a four-year deal with Swiss side Basel.
The pacey winger, who is capable of playing as a striker as well was producing outstanding displays for the RotBlau from 2012 to 2014 and, as a result, Chelsea chiefs decided to sign him on 26 January, 2015 for a fee of £11 million. Mohamed Salah, though, failed to impress in the Premier league and one year later he was sent on loan to Fiorentina.
After making 16 league appearances for the Viola in the Serie A, the left-footed winger signed a loan deal with Roma on 6 August, 2015. The Romans made the contract permanent on 3 August, 2016. Speaking of his international career, Salah made his Egypt debut on 3 September, 2011 in a 2-1 loss to Sierra Leone. It has to be noted that he was named Roma’s player of the season (2015/2016).
Highlighted Team (Derby):
Derby County is one of the 12 founder members of the Football League. However, nowadays the Rams compete in the Championship and they play their home matches at Pride Park Stadium. Derby County have won the two trophies in the English top flight (1971/1972, 1974/1975), with the team lifting the FA Cup trophy just after the World War II (1946).
Derby’s main rivals are Nottingham Forest, Leicester City and Leeds United, but the rivalry between Forest and Derby is regarded as the biggest one.
The two teams take on each other in the East Midlands derby. The colour of Derby’s shirts is white, whilst their shorts are black. It has to be noted that the club was founded in 1884 by William Morley. The Rams competed in the European competitions four times, but they did not record a notable result in the European Cups. The club’s chairman is Mel Morris.
