Morocco
Belgium will be aiming to retain top position in Group F when they take on Morocco in Doha on Sunday afternoon. The Red Devils defeated Canada thanks to Michy Batshuayi’s goal, but it has to be noted that the Canucks failed to convert a penalty in the first half. Inter center-forward Romelu Lukaku remains on the sidelines with an injury, while there are no other selection worries in Roberto Martinez’s team.
The Atlas Lions, on the other hand, did well to hold Croatia to a goalless draw in their opener, but they will have much bigger fish to fry against Belgium. In their last meeting at the World Cup finals, back in 1994, Belgium defeated Morocco 1-0, and we predict that history is going to repeat itself. Both Abdelhamid Sabiri and Abdessamad Ezzalzouli should miss out with injuries for the African side, as well as Noussair Mazraoui, who limped off with injury against Croatia.
Highlighted Player (Thibaut Courtois):
Born on 11 May 1992, Thibaut Courtois is a very talented Belgian goalkeeper who plays for Chelsea. Courtois began his senior football career at Genk, but after spending two seasons at Cristal Arena, he joined Chelsea in 2011.
The club chiefs decided to send him on loan to Atletico Madrid, but seeing that Courtois impressed during his spell with the La Liga team, Jose Mourinho confirmed in June, 2014 that the Belgian goalkeeper would return to Chelsea for the 2014/2015 campaign. Thibaut Courtois helped Chelsea win the Premier League trophy in 2015, but the general impression is that he had performed much better while at Atletico Madrid. He won the La Liga title in the 2013/2014 season, while lifting the UEFA Europa League trophy in 2012.
Two years later Courtois participated in the Champions League final, but Real Madrid proved to be a big catch for Atletico Madrid. Speaking of his individual awards, Thibaut Courtois was named the La Liga Goalkeeper of the Year (2013).
Highlighted Team (Morocco):
Morocco, the Atlas Lions, are the first African team to win a group at the World Cup finals. Back in 1986 the team managed to finish the group stages above Portugal, Poland and England, but West Germany proved to be a big catch for the Moroccan national team in the last 16 of the tournament.
The Atlas Lions participated at the World Cup finals on four occasions, but winning of the 1976 African Cup of Nations is considered the team’s biggest success. Morocco were producing outstanding displays at the tournament in Ethiopia and it has to be noted that they defeated Guinea in the title game.
Morocco play their home games at Stade Adrar and Stade de Marrakech and they wear red shirts and green shorts when playing in front of home fans. A number of top-class footballers played for Morocco in the past, but Mustafa Hadji is certainly the biggest star who played for the Moroccan national team.
