Our prediction for this Netherlands Eredivisie match:
Sparta Stadion Het Kasteel will be packed when Sparta Rotterdam and Ajax go head to head in an eagerly-awaited Jupiler League game. The Rotterdammers aim to make amends for a 2-1 loss to Twente, but keep in mind that they were beaten by Ajax in each of the previous seven meetings between the two teams in the “Gateway to Europe”. Defender Bart Vriends remains in the recovery room, while midfielder Camiel Neghli is a major doubt.
Ajax, on the other hand, dropped two points in a 2-2 draw with Fortuna Sittard at the weekend. Sparta, though, suit the Amsterdammers, which is probably the main reason why we are going to bet on Jordan Henderson and Co. Steven Bergwijn should recover in time to face Jeroen Rijsdijk’s troops, while talented defender Tristan Gooijer is back from the Europa Conference League ban. Fellow defender Ahmetcan Kaplan suffered an injury in the Conference League loss to Aston Villa. Earlier this season Ajax defeated Sparta Rotterdam 2-1 at Johan Cruijff Arena.
Highlighted Player (Steven Bergwijn):
Steven Bergwin is a product of ASC Waterwijk football school, but in 2009 he was spotted by Ajax scouts. In 2011 he moved to PSG and he continued playing for the club’s reserve team at senior level. He made his debut with the senior team on May 20, 2015 in a 2-0 win over Heracles.
Over the years the Dutch footballer born in Amsterdam on October 8, 1997, has established himself as a first-team regular at PSV, earning a call-up for the national team as well. Steven Bergwijn made his Netherlands debut on October 12, 2018 in a 3-0 win over Germany. His main position is left winger, but he is used as both right winger and centre-forward as well.
His preferred foot is right and it has to be noted that his parents are of Suriname descent, he has a dual citizenship. Bergwijn scored 14 goals in 33 appearances for PSV in the 2018/2019 Eredivisie season.
Highlighted Team (Sparta Rotterdam):
Founded back on April 1, 1888, Sparta Rotterdam is considered one of the oldest clubs in the Netherlands. De Kasteelheren (the Castle Lords) welcome their opponents at Het Kasteel, and they have a great rivalry with Feyenoord. Yet another Rotterdam club Excelsior are considered Sparta’s fierce rivals as well.
Sparta Rotterdam wear white shirts with red strips when playing on home soil, while sky blue is the dominant colour of their away kit. De Kasteelheren have won six Eredivisie trophies. Sparta were the dominant force in the Dutch football in the 1910s, with the team winning their last league title in the 1958/59 season.
De Kasteelheren have won three Dutch Cup trophies as well (1957/58, 1961/62, 1965/66). In the 1985/86 season Sparta last participated in the UEFA Cup, with the team beating Hamburger SC in round 1, while suffering elimination to Borussia Monchengladbach in the second round. Sparta’s stadium Het Kasteel can hold up to 11,926 spectators.
