Our prediction for this World Cup 2026 match:
Scotland play host to Faroe Islands at Hampden Park on Wednesday evening in what is a must-win game for Steve Clark’s troops. The Scotts kicked off their 2022 World Cup qualifying campaign with back-to-back draws with Austria and Israel, but they are surely capable of beating Faroe Islands in Glasgow. Newcastle United winger Ryan Fraser, who found the net in the 1-1 draw with Israel, should keep his place in the starting XI, but a man to watch in the home team will be Man Utd ace Scott McTominay.
Hakan Ericson’s troops experienced all sorts of problems at the back in a 3-1 defeat to Austria, and we do not believe that they are capable of spoiling Scotland’s party at Hampden Park. Scotland defeated Faroe Islands in each of the previous four meetings between the two national teams, which is yet another reason why home win should be considered.
Highlighted Player (Liam Cooper):
Liam Cooper is a Scotland international, who was born in Kingston Upon Hull, England. Cooper was eligible to play for both England and Scotland, but he decided to represent the Scotts on the international stage.
The Leeds United defender, who is capable of playing at left and centre back, received his first ever call-up for Scotland on 10 March 2016 for a friendly match against Denmark, but he did not make his debut for the senior team back then. Liam Cooper began his career at Hull City and, after spending several seasons on loan at Carlisle United and Huddersfield Town he joined Chesterfield in 2013.
On 13 August, 2014, he signed a three-year deal with Leeds United for an undisclosed fee. Speaking of individual honours, Liam Cooper was named Young Player of the Year for the 2007/2008 season (Hull City). It has to be noted that he won Football League Two with Chesterfield in the 2013/2014 season.
Highlighted Team (Faroe Islands):
Faroe Islands gained membership of FIFA on July 2, 1988 and they played their first official game on August 24 against Iceland. They were beaten by the Icelanders in Akranes, but two years later they recorded probably the most significant victory in the history of the national team as they defeated Austria 1-0 in Euro 1992 qualifiers.
Faroe Islands have yet to qualify for a major tournament, but they have been making progress year by year. The Landsliðið play their home games at Torsvollur and the capacity of the venue is 6.000. Faroe Islands recorded their biggest win against Gibraltar on March 1, 2014 (4-1) and they suffered their biggest defeat in 1996 when they were beaten 8-1 by Yugoslavia in front of home fans.
In the 2016 European Championship qualifiers Faroe Islands recorded a double victory over Greece, but the minnows eventually failed to book their place at the showpiece tournament in France. The likes of Frodi Benjaminsen, Oli Johannesen, Rogvi Jacobsen, Todi Jonsson and Jakup Mikkelsen are the most notable footballers who played for the Faroe Islands national team.
