Our prediction for this Ligue 1 match:
Olympique Marseille play host to Lorient at their Stade Velodrome in the opening match of round 33. OM continue with their habit of producing much better showings at home than on the travels, with the team eyeing their fourth consecutive win at home ground in the French top flight. Defender Duje Caleta-Car is banned for the hosts, as well as Alvaro Gonzalez, while Sakai, Nagatomo, Rongier, and Amavi remain on the sidelines with injuries.
Les Merlus, on the other hand, experienced all sorts of problems at the back in a 4-1 loss to Lens, and given Marseille’s fine home record in the second half of the season, we believe that punters can find value in betting on Jorge Sampaoli’s troops. The likes of Boisgard, Ilori, Fontaine, and Saunier are out of contention with injuries, but there are no suspended players in the away team.
Highlighted Player (Florian Thauvin):
Born in Orleans, France on January 26, 1993, Florian Thauvan is a pacey winger who plays for Olympique Marseille. After spending his youth career at Ingre, Saint-Jean-de-la-Ruelle, Orleans and Grenoble, Thauvin made his senior debut with Grenoble in 2011.
The French footballer played for the likes of Bastia and Olympique Marseille in his homeland as well before joining Newcastle United in 2015. Even though many people expected that he would shine in the Premier League, Florian Thauvin was playing below expectations with the Magpies and, as a result, he returned to Olympique Marseille in 2016. Thauvin spend the 2016/2017 season on loan at the Stade Velodrome outfit and the deal was made permanent in the summer of 2017.
Speaking of his international career, Florian Thauvin scored seven goals in ten appearances for France U21 team, while making his debut for the senior squad in a 5-0 win over Paraguay in June, 2017. Thauvin’s main position is right winger, but he is capable of playing as both left winger and attacking midfielder as well.
Highlighted Team (Lorient):
Founded back in 1926, Lorient is a French football club that competes in Ligue 1. Les Merlus have yet to win the Ligue 1 trophy, but they did well to go all the way in the Coupe de France in the 2001/02 season. In the title game, Lorient defeated Bastia thanks to Jean-Claude Darcheville’s goal.
The same season les Merlus made it to the Coupe de la Ligue final, but Bordeaux proved to be a big catch (0-3) for them in the title game. Lorient welcome their rivals at Stade du Moustoir, the stadium which can hold up to 16,392 spectators. The colour of the team’s home shirt is orange with a little black on it, while white is the dominant colour of their away jersey. In the 2002/03 season Lorient represented France in European competitions.
Les Merlus, though, failed to impress on their debut in the UEFA Cup as they were beaten by Denizlispor in the round 1 double-header.
