Our prediction for this Champions League match:
Sheriff Tiraspol play host to Shakhtar Donetsk at Stadionul Sheriff in the opening match of their Champions League campaign. The Moldovan champions booked their place in the group stages of the elite competition by beating Crvena Zvezda and Dinamo Zagreb, and they are surely capable of matching the Miners at home ground. A man to watch in the home team will be Mali forward Adama Traore, who impressed in the double-header with Dinamo Zagreb.
Shakhtar Donetsk did well to eliminate Monaco in the playoffs, but seeing that Sheriff have been impressive in the elite competition this term, we are tempted to put our money on draw. Goalkeeper Anatolii Trubin should be the only absentee in the away team. In their last meeting at the venue the two teams played out a goalless draw, back in 2003.
Highlighted Player (Veaceslav Posmac):
Veaceslav Posmac is a Moldavian footballer who was born in Chisinau on November 7, 1990. The right-footed defender currently plays for Sheriff Tiraspol as a centre-back, but he started his senior career at Stantul Gheorghe. It has to be noted that he played for his home-town club Dacia Chisinau from 2012 to 2017.
Veaceslav Posmac made his Sheriff debut on July 9, 2017 in a 5-0 win over Zaria and he did remarkably well to score on his debut. The 188-cm tall defender plays for Moldova as well and he made his debut for the national team in a 2-1 win over Kyrgyzstan on June 14, 2013.
Veaceslav Posmac scored his first ever goal for Moldova on January 15, 2014in a 2-1 loss to Norway. The Moldavian defender is very good in the air and despite the fact that his main position is centre-back he often scores goals after set-pieces. Veaceslav Posmac wears No. 90 on his shirt.
Highlighted Team (Shakhtar):
Despite the fact that they were founded back in 1936, Shakhtar Donetsk were struggling to win the Ukrainian Premier League trophy until 2002. The Miners have established themselves as the dominant force in Ukrainian football and it has to be noted that they won their ninth domestic trophy in 2014.
Shakhtar Donetsk were playing at Donbass Arena in the past, but due to war in Donbass the club temporarily moved to Arena Lviv. In 2009 the Miners won the UEFA Cup trophy under Romanian boss Mircea Lucescu, beating Werder Bremen in the title game. Croatian full back Dario Srna was named the man of the match. Dynamo Kiev are considered Shakhtar Donetsk’s main rivals and there have always been fireworks in meetings between the two sides.
Shakhtar have a rivalry with Metalurh Donetsk as well and the two local rivals face each other in the Donetsk Derby. Chelsea ace Willian, Manchester United star Mkhitaryan and Manchester City midfielder Fernandinho all played for Shakhtar in the past.
