Our prediction for this Belgium Pro League match:
Standard Liege and Waregem face each other at Stade Maurice Dufrasne in the Jupiler League round 21. The Red Devils aim to bounce back from a 2-1 loss to Leuven, and the bookies see them as favourites to win the Boxing Day clash. Both Nicolas Raskin and Selim Amallah are sidelined through suspension, while the likes of Abdoul Tapsoba and Denis Dragus miss out with injuries.
Waregem, on the other hand, quickly bounced back from a 2-0 loss to Royale Union SG, with the team beating Mechelen 3-2 in their last league match. The visitors aim to escape the danger zone, but seeing that Standard are a real force to be reckoned with at home, we do not believe that the visitors are capable of grabbing something from the match. All Abdoulaye Sissako, Bent Sormo, and Joost van Aken should miss out with injuries for the visitors.
Highlighted Player (Mehdi Carcela-González):
Despite being born in Liege, Belgium on July 1, 1989, Mehdi Carcela represents Morocco on the international stage. Carcela initially chose to play for his country of birth Belgium, taking part in two friendlies with the Red Devils, but in February 2011 he made his debut with Morocco.
He represented Morocco at the 2018 FIFA World Cup finals in Russia, but the African side failed to make it to the knockout stages of the showpiece tournament. Speaking of his club career, Mehdi Carcela played for the likes of Standard Liege, Anzhi, Benfica, Granada and Olympiakos (on loan). He currently plays for Standard Liege on loan from Granada.
Mehdi Carcela’s main position is right winger, but he is capable of playing as both attacking midfielder and left winger as well. In the 2008/2009 season the Morocco international won the Belgian Pro League with Standard and seven seasons later he repeated the success with Benfica as the Eagles won Primeira Liga. His preferred foot is left.
Highlighted Team (Waregem):
Over the years Zulte Waregem have established themselves as a top-table side in Belgian Super League. The Essevee are a product of a partnership between Zulte and Waregem and it has to be noted that Zulte Sportief were founded back in 1950.
Zulte Waregem impressed in the 2012/2013 Belgian Super League campaign, with the team finishing the process in second place in the standings, only four points behind champions Anderlecht. As a result, the Essevee booked their place in the Europa League group stages, but despite recording victories over the likes of Maribor and Wigan Athletic in Group D the Belgian side eventually failed to advance to the knockout stages of the European competition.
Zulte Waregem, who welcome their rivals at Regenboogstadion, will play in the group stages of the Europa League in the 2017/2018 season. Zulte Waregem, who won the Belgian Cup in the 2016/2017 season, will face the likes of Nice, Lazio and Vitesse in Group K.
