Our prediction for this League 1 match:
Saturday’s football game at Abbey Stadium pits together Cambridge United and Crewe Alexandra, the two teams who sit in the opposite halves of the table. Cambridge United aim to build on back-to-back wins over Lincoln and Doncaster, and the bookies see them as favourites to beat Crewe at home ground as well. Sam Smith is widely expected to return to the starting line-up, while all Greg Taylor, Shilow Tracey, and Lloyd Jones should miss out with injuries.
The Railwaymen, on the other hand, aim to escape the relegation zone, but given Cambridge’s form in 2022, we predict that the visitors are going to return home empty-handed. Midfielder Luke Murphy, who limped off with injury in a goalless draw with Shrewsbury, is unlikely to feature against the U’s. Crewe boss David Artell has no fresh injury worries, and he is unlikely to make changes to the team that faced the Shrews.
Highlighted Player (Liam O’Neil):
Born in Cambridge, England on July 31, 1993, Liam O’Neil is an English footballer who plays as both defender as midfielder for Cambridge United in the League Two. O’Neil is a product of the Cambridge United football school, but he played for Histon during his youth career as well.
In the summer of 2012 he joined WBA youth academy, and it has to be noted that he made three appearances for the Baggies at senior level in all competitions. Liam O’Neil played for the likes of VPS and Scunthorpe United on loan as well before joining Chesterfield in 2015.
After scoring two goals in 45 appearances for the club in the league, O’Neil moved to Cambridge United in the winter of 2017. As his mother comes from Wales, O’Neil is open to play for the Wales national team, but he has yet to earn a cap with the Dragons.
Highlighted Team (Crewe):
Crewe Aleandra are a professional football club that welcome their rivals at Gresty Road. The stadium was built in 1906, and it can hold up to 10,153 spectators. Founded back in 1877, Crewe Alexandra play their home games in red shirts and white shorts, while yellow is the dominant colour of their away kit.
The Railwaymen played their first game against North Staffs in 1877, with the two teams sharing the spoils (1-1) at Alexandra Recreation Ground. Nowadays, Crewe compete in the League 2 where they take on their main rivals Port Vale. In 2014 a match between the two sides resulted in violence and arrests. The likes of Wrexham, Macclesfield Town, Shrewsbury Town, and Stoke City are considered the club’s rivals as well.
In 2013 Crewe Alexandra clinched the Football League Trophy as they defeated Southend United 2-0 in the title game at Wembley Stadium. Goals from Max Clayton and Luke Murphy helped the Railwaymen clinch their first and only Football League Trophy.
