Our prediction for this Bundesliga match:
Buoyed by a thrilling 5-2 win over Eintracht Frankfurt, Borussia Dortmund will be looking to give fans yet another reason for celebration when they take on Freiburg at Dreimstadion. Marco Rose’s troops have been scoring goals for fun in all competitions at the start of the season, and they are likely to stick to their attacking style of play. As always, a man to watch in the away team will be Erling Haland, who scored a brace in the season opener.
Keep in mind, though, that the likes of Hazard, Can, Guerreiro, Hummels, Morey, and Zagadou have been struggling with injuries of late. Marcel Schmelzer has recovered from a knee injury, while both Julian Brandt and Thomas Meunier have been tested positive for coronavirus. Freiburg failed to impress in a goalless draw with Arminia Bielefeld, and even though Borussia Dortmund head into the match with a severely-weakened squad, away win should be considered. All Gulde, Burkart, and Petersen are likely to miss the game with injuries for the hosts.
Highlighted Player (Nils Petersen):
Son to a football coach, Andreas, the Freiburg striker Nils Petersen is a physical forward best known for his clinical finishing. A former Bayern Munich striker never got a chance to prove his worth with Bundesliga giants and had to take a long road to prominence which included loan spells at Werder Bremen and Freiburg, before penning a permanent deal with Die Breisaguer in 2015.
Petersen’s impressive exploits during the 2017/18 season helped him get into Germany’s provisional FIFA World Cup 2018 squad although his father Andreas would argue it was his personal influence that helped Joachim Loew write his son’s name in the 23-man list. Namely, Andres Piteresen spotted the Germany manager on a beach in January and decided to ask him about his son’s chances of making it into Germany World Cup squad.
Piteresen was rewarded with his senior Germany cap in an Austria friendly but unfortunately for his father missed out on the final squad for the tournament in Russia.
Highlighted Team (Borussia Dortmund):
1909 by eighteen footballers from Dortmund. Die Schwarzgelben (The Black and Yellows) play their home games at Signal Iduna Park, but the stadium’s original name is Westfalenstadion. The capacity of Borussia’s home ground is 81,539 and it has to be noted that the stadium was opened in 1974. BVB have the highest average attendance in the world of football.
Borussia Dortmund have won eight Bundesliga trophies, while clinching the German Cup title three times.
However, the club’s biggest success came in 1997 when they outplayed Juventus in the Champions League final. Karl-Heinz Riedle scored a brace for BVB in the 3-1 win over Juve, with Lars Ricken finding the net in the title game as well. Borussia’s biggest rivals are Schalke 04 and the two teams square off against each other in the Revierderby.
