Our prediction for this Bundesliga match:
Following a morale-boosting win over Hertha Berlin, Werder Bremen will be aiming to move closer to the Europa League places when they face Schalke at their Weserstadion in what used to be a Bundesliga derby. Die Werderaner quickly bounced back from back-to-back defeats to Mainz and Freiburg, but they do not want to stop now. Marco Friedl is back from suspension, while midfielders Nicolai Rapp and Jean-Manuel Mbom continue to miss out with injuries.
Die Knappen, on the other hand, do not seem to be competitive at this level, with the team collecting no more than six points in the process, and given their six-game losing run in the German top flight, anything but an easy home victory would be a big surprise. As for the away team, all Ouwejan, Kolodziejczak, Drexler, Larsson, Greiml, Zalazar, van den Berg, Cisse, and Kaminski are out of contention.
Highlighted Player (Oliver Burke):
A product of the Nottingham Forest football academy, Oliver Burke made his domestic debut in 2014, when he was only 17 years of age. Born in Kirkcaldy, Oliver Burke is the captain of Scotland Under-21 side who’s faced plenty of criticism ever since leaving the Championship side.
Having left Forest for Red Bull Leipzig in 2016 in a £13 million deal Oliver Burke became the most expensive Scottish player in history, whereas his hit the record book all over again the very next year when West Bromwich Albion saved him from a German misery in a £15 million deal. Burke was regularly praised for his physical ability during his time in the Bundesliga, but Leipzig coaching staff had plenty of tactical questions hanging over his head.
A precocious talent who had only scraped the surface of his own potential, Burke is looking to get his career back on track. Despite being only 21 years of age, Burke already has 5 senior appearances for Scotland under his belt.
Highlighted Team (Schalke):
Schalke 04 are a professional football club founded in 1904. Die Knappen (The Miners) compete in German Bundesliga and they have won seven domestic titles. Schalke have clinched five German Cup trophies as well, while lifting the UEFA Cup title in 1997. The German club defeated Italian side Inter on penalties in the title game and that was the last time the final of the competition was played in a two-legged format.
Schalke 04 play their home matches at Veltins-Arena, the stadium that has been the home of the team since 2001. The capacity of Veltins-Arena is 62,271. It is well known that Borussia Dortmund are Schalke’s main rivals and the Ruhy neighbours face each other in the Revierderby.
The likes of Klaus Fichtel (477), Norbert Nigbur (355), Rolf Russmann (304), Klaus Fischer (295), Olaf Thon (295) and Herbert Lutkebohmert (286) are the players with most appearances for die Knappen. The colour of Schalke’s home kit is blue.
