Our prediction for this Championship match:
Kassam Stadium will host Saturday’s football game between Oxford United and Middlesbrough, the two teams sitting in the opposite halves of the table. The Yellows aim to bounce back from a 1-0 loss to Watford and you should know that they have suffered only one defeat at home so far this term. The likes of Kyle Edwards, Siriki Dembele, Przemyslaw Placheta, Cameron Brannagan, Joseph Bennett, and Matt Phillips remain in the recovery room, but there are no fresh injury concerns in the home team.
The Boro, on the other hand, aim to build on back-to-back thrilling wins over Queens Park Rangers (4-1) and Luton Town (5-1). Even though Oxford United are tough to beat at home, Middlesbrough’s attacking potential should prove to be the key factor in Saturday’s showdown. The likes of Lukas Engel, Alex Gilbert, Darragh Lenihan, Tom Smith, and Alex Bangura are out of contention with injuries for the visiting side.
Highlighted Player (Paddy McNair):
Following in the footsteps of his compatriot Jonny Evans, Paddy McNair joined the Manchester United academy in 2011 and he was surprisingly handed first team debut by Louis van Gaal at the start of the 2014/2015 season.
Despite his fragile age, the talented central defender has been putting in some very mature performances ever since, and everything suggests he could go on to become an important player at Old Trafford in years to come. After representing a number of youth sides, McNair made his first appearance for the Northern Ireland senior national team in a March 2015 friendly vs Scotland, before making another three outings as his side secured their place at the Euro 2016 finals.
Northern Ireland coach Michael O’Neill surprisingly played McNair in holding midfield in the March 2016 friendly vs Wales. After the youngster impressed in the middle of the park, O’Neill went on to suggest that the Manchester United starlet may be used in midfield rather than defence in years to come in the national team.
Highlighted Team (Oxford United):
Oxford United are one of the oldest clubs in the League One as they were founded back in 1893. However, Oxford United adopted their current name 67 years later and have been playing under it ever since.
Over the years the Yellows have built a great rivalry with Swindon Town and there have always been fireworks in clashes between the two sides. Oxford United play home matches at Kassam Stadium, the venue with the capacity of 12,500. The stadium was built in 1997 and has been Oxford United’s home ground ever since. The Boys from Up the Hill are well known for their yellow and blue colours, but they play their away games in dark blue (with a little yellow) or black kits.
Oxford’s player with the most league appearances is John Shuker, playing 478 games for the club from 1962 to 1977. On the other hand, Jim Magilton is the club’s most capped player in internationals, playing 18 games for Northern Ireland.
