Our prediction for this Championship match:
Reading will be looking to escape the relegation zone when they take on Wigan in the penultimate game of the season. The Royals do not seem to be at their sharpest, with the team failing to win the previous eleven league matches and, as a result, their Championship status is in danger. Tyrese Fornah is widely expected to return to the starting XI, while all Liam Moore, Tom Ince, Junior Hoilett, Abdul-Rahman Baba, Sam Hutchinson, Ovie Ejaria, and Dejan Tetek remain in the treatment room.
The Latics, on the other hand, aim to build on back-to-back wins over Stoke and Millwall. Wigan Athletic are eager to move one step closer to the safe zone and seeing that they will go for a win as well, we believe that there is a big value in betting on both teams to score. Norway midfielder deserves a spot in the starting XI after scoring the winner against the Lions, while all Ben Amos, Danel Sinani, Jason Kerr, and Martin Kelly are sidelined with injuries.
Highlighted Player (Shane Long):
Shane Long is an Irish international striker who has so far made over 60 appearances for the Republic of Ireland national team, scoring more than 15 goals in the process. The forward began his professional career at Cork City, but only made one league appearance for the club ahead of the switch to Reading, where he would go on to spend next seven years.
During that time, Long established himself as one of the best Irish strikers plying their trade in England, and also went on to represent West Bromwich Albion, Hull City and Southampton.
Despite not exactly boasting an enviable goalscoring record for a centre forward, Long was always held in high regard by both managers and his peers, with his incredible work rate and never-say-die attitude winning him plenty of admirers. Long will also go down as one of the most prolific scorers in the history of the Republic of Ireland national team, which he represented at the Euro 2012 and Euro 2016 finals.
Highlighted Team (Wigan):
Wigan Athletic are one of the winners of the English FA Cup. The Latics won the prestigious trophy in 2013, with the team upsetting Manchester City in the title game. This is considered the club’s biggest success, but it has to be noted that Wigan played in the UEFA Europa League in the 2013/2014 season.
Wigan have been playing their home games at the DW Stadium since 1999 and they had played at Springfield Park in the past. Chorley are considered Wigan’s fierce rivals, but the two teams last met in 1971, when they competed in the Northern Premier League. The likes of Preston North End, Bury, Oldham Athletic, Burnley and Blackburn Rovers are regarded as Wigan Athletic’s rivals as well.
The club was founded in 1932 and they competed in the English Premier League from 2005 to 2013. The colour of Wigan’s home kit is blue and white (stripes).
