Our prediction for this Championship match:
Buoyed by the FA Cup triumph (4-0) over Walsall, Southampton will look to give fans yet another reason to celebrate when they take on Sheffield Wednesday in the Championship round 27. The Saints are a real force to be reckoned with at home, with the team eyeing their eighth consecutive win at St. Mary’s Stadium and they are seen as hot favourites to beat the Owls as well. Even though both Joe Aribo and Kamaldee Sulemana are on international duty, home win should be considered.
Sheffield Wednesday, on the other hand, have been showing signs of improvement in 2024, with beating both Preston and Hull City in the Championship, while rolling over Cardiff City in the FA Cup last 64. The Owls, though, are not regarded as good travellers and we do not believe that they are capable of spoiling Southampton’s party at St. Mary’s Stadium. Both Bambo Diaby and George Byers are banned for the match, speaking of the away team.
Highlighted Player (Josh Windass):
Born in Hull, England on January 9, 1994, John Windass is a professional footballer who plays for Wigan Athletic. Windass is a product of Huddersfield Town youth academy, but he did not play for the Terriers at senior level.
The 175-cm-tall midfielder began his senior career at Accrington Stanley and after scoring 22 goals in 77 appearances in the league for the club, he moved to Glasgow Rangers in the summer of 2016. Two years later Josh Windass joined Wigan Athletic and he has been playing for the DW Stadium outfit ever since. He scored his first Championship goal on September 18, 2018 in a 2-1 win over Hull City.
His main position is attacking midfield, but he is used as both central midfielder and second striker as well. It has to be noted that Josh is the son of former footballer Dean Windass, who played for the likes of Hull City, Middlesbrough, Sheffield United and Bradford City during his professional career.
Highlighted Team (Southampton):
Southampton are an English football club that have been playing their home games at St Mary's Stadium since 2001. The Saints were based at The Dell in the past and the capacity of Southampton’s new stadium is 32,505. Southampton wear red and white striped shirts and the colour of the team’s away kit is navy and green.
The Saints have yet to win the Premier League trophy, but they did well to clinch the FA Cup title back in 1976, while participating in the final of the prestigious competition in 1900, 1902 and 2003. Southampton outplayed Manchester United in the 1976 FA Cup final and that is probably the club’s greatest victory ever.
The club are well known for their football academy and Real Madrid superstar Gareth Bale is one of the players who began their football carrier at the St. Mary’s Stadium outfit. Southampton’s fiercest rivals are Portsmouth and the two teams square off against each other in the South Coast Derby.
