Our prediction for this Champions League match:
Sammy Ofer Stadium will host Wednesday’s Champions League game between Maccabi Haifa and Young Boys, who face each other in the first leg of the Champions League final qualifying round. Over the years Maccabi Haifa have established themselves as the dominant force in Israeli football and their four-game winning run in all competitions is surely giving fans a reason for optimism ahead of the visit of Young Boys. The bad news for the hosts is that defender Pierre Cornud misses the match through suspension.
The Yellow-Blacks, on the other hand, are undefeated in the new Swiss Super League campaign, but Maccabi Haifa will pose a much bigger threat for Raphael Wicky’s troops than their previous rivals. The Greens are a real force to be reckoned with at home, and we predict that they will emerge triumphant in the first leg. There are no fresh injury worries in the visiting team.
Highlighted Player (Tjaronn Chery):
Tjaronn Chery is a pacey winger who is well known for his brilliant crosses. Chery impressed with Groningen in the 2014/2015 Eredivisie campaign and, as a result, QPR owners decided to sign him. The Dutch footballer was born in Hague on 4 June, 1988, but he has yet to make his debut for the Oranje.
Nonetheless, you should bear in mind that he was called up to the Netherlands squad in May, 2015. He used to play for the likes of Den Haag, Emmen, Roosendaal, Cambuur and Twente in the past, but no doubt, he was producing the best performances during his spell with Groningen.
Chery scored ten goals for Queens Park Rangers in the 2015/2016 Championship campaign and he was named Players’ Player of the Year. He is capable of playing on both wings, but he plays as an attacking midfielder as well. Tjaronn Chery has a deal with QPR which expires on 30 June, 2018. He is a left-footed player.
Highlighted Team (Young Boys):
Just five years after its foundation Young Boys won their first Swiss Super League trophy (1903). The capital club won no less than 11 domestic trophies in the 20th century, but they have been in Basel’s shadow in the last two decades. Young Boys won their last Swiss Super League title back in 1986, while lifting their last Swiss Cup trophy in 1987.
The Yellow and Blacks welcome their rivals at Stade de Suisse, which acts as a national stadium and it has to be noted that they play their home games on artificial turf. Swiss football legend Stephane Chapuisat played for the club in the past and you should bear in mind that former Yugoslavia coach Vujadin Boskov played for the Stade de Suisse outfit in the past as well.
Young Boys played their first official game on 29 June, 1898 and they shared the spoils with Institute Grunau back then. The Swiss team participated in the 2016/2017 Champions League qualifiers, but they failed to make it to the group stages of the elite competition.
