Our prediction for this EFL Cup match:
Cambridge United and Southampton square off against each other at Abbey Stadium in a highly-anticipated EFL Cup game. The U’s have been having their ups and downs of late, with the team beating Exeter, losing to Portsmouth, while sharing the spoils with Charlton. Cambridge United seem to struggle at the back, and it is no wonder the bookies see them as big underdogs in Tuesday’s clash. There are no fresh injury worries in the home team ahead of the visit of Southampton.
The Saints, on the other hand, came from behind to beat Leicester City at King Power Stadium at the weekend, with the team regaining a much-needed confidence. The Premier League side aim to give fans yet another reason for celebration, and regardless of which players will be deployed in the starting XI, away win should be considered. Che Adams is pushing for a start after scoring a brace against the Foxes, while both Livramento and Perraud remain in the recovery room.
Highlighted Player (Liam O’Neil):
Born in Cambridge, England on July 31, 1993, Liam O’Neil is an English footballer who plays as both defender as midfielder for Cambridge United in the League Two. O’Neil is a product of the Cambridge United football school, but he played for Histon during his youth career as well.
In the summer of 2012 he joined WBA youth academy, and it has to be noted that he made three appearances for the Baggies at senior level in all competitions. Liam O’Neil played for the likes of VPS and Scunthorpe United on loan as well before joining Chesterfield in 2015.
After scoring two goals in 45 appearances for the club in the league, O’Neil moved to Cambridge United in the winter of 2017. As his mother comes from Wales, O’Neil is open to play for the Wales national team, but he has yet to earn a cap with the Dragons.
Highlighted Team (Southampton):
Southampton are an English football club that have been playing their home games at St Mary's Stadium since 2001. The Saints were based at The Dell in the past and the capacity of Southampton’s new stadium is 32,505. Southampton wear red and white striped shirts and the colour of the team’s away kit is navy and green.
The Saints have yet to win the Premier League trophy, but they did well to clinch the FA Cup title back in 1976, while participating in the final of the prestigious competition in 1900, 1902 and 2003. Southampton outplayed Manchester United in the 1976 FA Cup final and that is probably the club’s greatest victory ever.
The club are well known for their football academy and Real Madrid superstar Gareth Bale is one of the players who began their football carrier at the St. Mary’s Stadium outfit. Southampton’s fiercest rivals are Portsmouth and the two teams square off against each other in the South Coast Derby.
