Our prediction for this EFL Cup match:
A spot in the EFL Cup last 64 will be at stake when Preston and Salford City go head to head at Deepdale on Tuesday evening. The Lilywhites kicked off the new Championship campaign with a 1-1 draw against Bristol City, with key player Will Keane scoring the equalizing goal. The Ireland forward could be rested against Salford, with teenage forward Felipe Rodriguez pushing for a start. Both Ched Evans and Emil Riis should miss out through injuries.
The Lions, meanwhile, aim to build on a 2-0 win over Forest Green, but beating Preston on the road is easier said than done. When the two teams met in a friendly three years ago Preston defeated Salford 3-1, which is yet another reason why we are going to bet on the Championship outfit. Even though there are no fresh injury concerns in the away team, Matt Smith should return to the starting XI after scoring as a substitute in the season opener.
Highlighted Player (Conor McAleny):
Conor McAleny is a product of Everton youth academy, joining the club from Merseyside in 2003 at the age of 11. Despite the fact that his main position is centre-forward, McAleny is used as both second striker and left winger as well. McAleny did spend his youth career at Goodison Park, but it has to be noted that he made no more than two appearances for the Toffees at senior level.
The English attacker, who was born in Whiston on August 12, 1992, made his first-team debut in a 1-0 Premier League loss to Arsenal on December, 2011. Conor McAleny played for the likes of Scunthorpe United, Brentford, Cardiff City, Charlton Athletic, Wigan Athletic and Oxford United before signing a deal with Fleetwood Town.
The right-footed striker spent the second half of the 2018/2019 season on loan at Kilmarnock, scoring 3 goals in 11 appearances for the club in the Scottish Premier League.
Highlighted Team (Preston):
Preston North End or Preston were founded in 1880. The Lilywhites or the Invincibles play their home games at Deepdale, the stadium that was built in 1875 and opened three years later.
In 1889 Preston won their first FA Cup trophy and they did well to beat Huddersfield Town in the final of the 1938 FA Cup final. However, the club’s biggest success came in 1889 and 1890 when they won back-to-back domestic trophies (First Division).
Preston have yet to win the League Cup title, but they were runners-up in 1888, 1922, 1937, 1954, 1964. Preston’s main rivals are Blackpool and the two teams square off against each other in the West Lancashire derby. In their first ever meeting in the West Lancashire derby (1901) Preston recorded a 4-1 win over Blackpool.
Burnley and Blackburn Rovers are considered Preston’s big rivals as well. The colour of Preston’s shirts is white and they wear dark blue shorts.
