Our prediction for this EFL Cup match:
A spot in the EFL Cup quarter-finals will be at stake when Southampton and Stoke City lock horns at St. Mary’s Stadium. The Saints are eager to put an end to their four-game losing run and they are likely to fight tooth and nail against Stoke. Both Joe Aribo and Adam Armstrong should be recalled to the starting XI, while both Will Smallbone and Ross Stewart remain in the recovery room.
The Potters, on the other hand, failed to spoil Sheffield United’s party at Bramall Lane at the weekend. Considering that Southampton produced a fine display in a 1-0 loss to Man City at Etihad Stadium, we predict that the visitors are going to return home empty-handed. In their last meeting in the competition ten years ago, Southampton defeated Stoke 3-2 and we predict that history is going to repeat itself. Korea international Jun-Ho Bae should be recalled to Stoke City’s starting XI, while all Sam Gallagher, Bosun Lawal, Lynden Gooch, and Ben Pearson remain on the sidelines with injuries.
Highlighted Player (Jack Bonham):
Jack Bonham is a professional footballer who was born in Stevenage on the 14th of September, 1993. The 26-year-old, although having born in England, is an Irish International and has featured for the Republic of Ireland's Under-17 team five times.
At the club level, he began his youth career with Watford and signed his first professional contract in September 2010 at the age of 17. Bonham's first-ever professional appearance came on the 4th of May, 2013 as a substitute against Leeds United in the final game of the 12/13 Championship season.
This appearance marked the 1.92 m standing goalkeeper's only appearance in a Watford shirt. Bonham then went on to play for clubs like Brentford, Carlisle United and Bristol Rovers before eventually joining Gillingham at the start of the 2019 season on a two-year contract. He's since featured nine times for the club and kept two clean sheets.
Highlighted Team (Southampton):
Southampton are an English football club that have been playing their home games at St Mary's Stadium since 2001. The Saints were based at The Dell in the past and the capacity of Southampton’s new stadium is 32,505. Southampton wear red and white striped shirts and the colour of the team’s away kit is navy and green.
The Saints have yet to win the Premier League trophy, but they did well to clinch the FA Cup title back in 1976, while participating in the final of the prestigious competition in 1900, 1902 and 2003. Southampton outplayed Manchester United in the 1976 FA Cup final and that is probably the club’s greatest victory ever.
The club are well known for their football academy and Real Madrid superstar Gareth Bale is one of the players who began their football carrier at the St. Mary’s Stadium outfit. Southampton’s fiercest rivals are Portsmouth and the two teams square off against each other in the South Coast Derby.
