Freiburg play host to Basel at their Europa-Park Stadion in the opening match of their Europa League campaign. Julian Schuster’s troops are brimming with confidence following back-to-back Bundesliga wins over Stuttgart (3-1) and Werder Bremen (3-0) and they are likely to stick to their attacking style of play. Forward Junior Adamu should recover in time to face Basel, while midfielder Daniel-Kofi Kyereh remains in the recovery room.
The RotBlau, on the other hand, failed to impress in the Champions League double-header with FC Copenhagen and despite their fine form in the Swiss Super League, we are tempted to place our bets on Freiburg, who are a real force to be reckoned with at home. A man to watch in the away team will be former Bayern Munich ace Xherdan Shaqiri, while both Benie Traore and Finn van Breemen remain on the sidelines with injuries.
Highlighted Player (Xherdan Shaqiri):
Another impressive player who emigrated to Switzerland, Xherdan Shaqiri is a midfielder with excellent technical qualities, very strong in taking players on and creating chances for his teammates, while also being a danger from set pieces. The Serbian-born footballer formed an excellent midfielder pairing with Granit Xhaka at FC Basel, before making a high-profile move to Bayern Munich in the summer of 2012.
Shaqiri went on to prove a great deal of potential at Allianz Arena, scoring 11 goals in 52 Bundesliga matches, but he decided to leave in search of first team football, first joining Inter Milan and then moving to Stoke City. It was at Britannia Stadium that the attacking midfielder rediscovered his form and if he continues playing at such a high level, it won’t be long before he returns to the biggest stage.
Even when he was not playing regularly at club level, Shaqiri would always reserve his best performances for the national team, as witnessed by 17 goals in first 50 caps. The midfielder was especially impressive at the 2014 World Cup finals, where he scored no fewer than three goals.

Freiburg are a professional football club that compete in German Bundesliga. Freiburg were founded in 1904 and they welcome their rivals at Schwarzwald-Stadion. The stadium has been the home of Freiburg since 1954 and the capacity of the facility is 24,000. Die Breisgau-Brasilianer wear black and white shirts and black shorts, whilst the colour of the team’s away kit is white.
Freiburg made it to the German Cup semis in the 2012/2013 DFB Pokal campaign, but their local rivals VfB Stuttgart proved to be a big catch for the Schwarzwald-Stadion outfit. After spending several years in lower leagues, Die Breisgau-Brasilianer returned to the German top flight in 2016.
