Our prediction for this Gold Cup match:
USA will look to kick off their 2023 Gold Cup campaign in style when they take on Jamaica in the Group A derby. The Yanks are seen as favourites to win the group, but keep in mind that all Christian Pulisic, Weston McKennie, Sergino Dest, Giovanni Reyna, and Timothy Weah have been omitted. As a result, one of the men to watch in Brian Callaghan’s team will be Jesus Ferreira, who has already netted ten goals for Dallas in the new MLS season.
The Reggae Boyz, on the other hand, failed to impress in back-to-back losses to Qatar and Jordan in friendly games, which is probably the main reason why we are going to bet on USA, who won the CONCACAF Nations League earlier this month. In their last meeting at the Gold Cup USA defeated Jamaica thanks to Matthew Hope’s late goal. Michail Antonio (West Ham) and Leon Bailey (Aston Villa) are the most notable players in the away team.
Highlighted Player (DeAndre Yedlin):
DeAndre Yedlin is a versatile 22-year-old young American footballer who is currently on loan at Sunderland from English Premier League side Tottenham Hotspur. His primary position is as a right-back but Yedlin can also play as a wingback or a wide midfielder. He is known for his speed on the wings and getting great crosses on the flanks.
Yedlin was part of Washington Youth Soccer’s State Olympic Development Program from 2006-09 before joining the Seattle Sounders FC youth academy in 2010. He played college soccer at the University of Akron starting in 20 games for the Zips.
Yedlin soon made his mark with Seattle Sounders and earned the record of becoming the first rookie to be named to the MLS team of the Week on his professional debut and the second rookie to make it to the All-star team. He earned his senior team debut in 2014 and has 33 caps to his name.
Highlighted Team (Jamaica):
The Reggae Boyz are enjoying in their 2014 Copa Centroamericana title and are looking forward to their second-ever entry into the Copa America. Jamaica took positives from their debut in the competition last year in Chile despite going out in the group stage and will now be willing to make one step further.
The country had more success later in the summer when Winfried Schafer’s men knocked off the United States in the semi-finals of the 2015 CONCACAF Gold Cup. The Reggae Boyz were ultimately stopped in the final as they lost to Mexico, but the ticket to 2016 Copa America was enough of a reward itself as four highest finishers were guaranteed a place at the competition.
Jamaica stepped onto the international scene with a 2-1 win over Haiti in 1925 and have so far qualified only once for the FIFA World Cup in 1998. It was not until 1965 that Jamaica made their first attempt to qualify for the World Cup though.
