Our prediction for this League 1 match:
All eyes will be on Aesseal New York Stadium when Rotherham United and Wigan Athletic face each other in the League One derby on Matchday 34. The Millers look unstoppable at the moment, and thanks to a 2-0 win over Sheffield Wednesday they moved one step closer to securing automatic promotion. The league leaders do not want to stop now, and they are likely to go all guns blazing at the Latics on Friday evening.
The attacking partnership of Ladabo and Smith has been in a perfect working order of late, and the duo is likely to prove a handful for the opposition defenders. Arsenal loanee Jordi Osei-Tutu could make his full Rotherham debut against Wigan. The Latics, on the other hand, aim to build on back-to-back wins over Charlton and Crewe. Wigan Athletic are eager to stay in top two, and, taking everything into account, both teams should be happy with one point from the match. Midfielder Graeme Shinnie should be recalled to the Latics’ starting XI.
Highlighted Player (Josh Vickers):
A product of Arsenal's youth academy, Josh Vickers, is an English footballer who plays for League One Club Lincoln City. The 6ft 2-inch goalkeeper's first appearance came for Isthmian League outfit Canvey Island having joined them on loan in August 2013. He went on to play over 30 games for the club before returning to Arsenal to sign his first professional contract.
His time at the Gunners was shortlived, however, and involved another loan to Conference South club Concord Rangers before making a permanent switch to Premier League side Swansea City in August 2015 on a two-year contract. In his time at Swansea, Vickers made zero appearances for the first team but did feature in the club's under-18 and under-23 team.
Vickers spent his 2016/2017 season on loan to Barnet, where he made his League One debut against Cambridge United on the 6th of August, 2016. Born on the 1st of December, 1995, the 23-year-old has featured 47 times for his current club Lincoln, on a contract that expires on the 30th of June, 2020.
Highlighted Team (Wigan):
Wigan Athletic are one of the winners of the English FA Cup. The Latics won the prestigious trophy in 2013, with the team upsetting Manchester City in the title game. This is considered the club’s biggest success, but it has to be noted that Wigan played in the UEFA Europa League in the 2013/2014 season.
Wigan have been playing their home games at the DW Stadium since 1999 and they had played at Springfield Park in the past. Chorley are considered Wigan’s fierce rivals, but the two teams last met in 1971, when they competed in the Northern Premier League. The likes of Preston North End, Bury, Oldham Athletic, Burnley and Blackburn Rovers are regarded as Wigan Athletic’s rivals as well.
The club was founded in 1932 and they competed in the English Premier League from 2005 to 2013. The colour of Wigan’s home kit is blue and white (stripes).
