Our prediction for this Nations League match:
Windson Park in Belfast will host Thursday’s UEFA Nations League game between Northern Ireland and Greece, who have not met in a competitive match since October 2015. Back then Northern Ireland outplayed Greece 3-1, meaning that the visitors are hungry for revenge. The Greeks aim to make amends for the unsuccessful World Cup qualifying campaign, but beating Northern Ireland on the road is easier said than done.
A man to watch in the away team will be Vangelis Pavlidis, who was scoring goals for fun with AZ Alkmaar last term. The Green and White Army, on the other hand, ruined Italy’s WC qualifying hopes as they played out a boring goalless draw with the Azzurri in their last group game. Since Northern Ireland are tough to beat at home, we are tempted to put our money on draw. All Lafferty, Washington, and Carson are back to the Northern Ireland squad, while McMenamin, Charles, Spencer, and McCann are eyeing their debuts for the national team.
Highlighted Player (Jonny Evans):
Originating from Belfast, Jonny Evans is one of the most famous football players from the new generation of the Northern Ireland national team, although numerous injuries prevented the centre-back from showing all he’s got.
Coming through the famous Manchester United youth academy, Evans was promoted to the senior set up by club icon Sir Alex Ferguson and he would go on to lift four Premier League trophies with the Red Devils, making over 130 league appearances for the club before moving to West Bromwich Albion in 2015. During his time at Old Trafford, the defender usually played back up to Nemanja Vidic and Rio Ferdinand, but made quite a few appearances in important games, including 31 Champions League outings.
As soon as he was given a chance to impress at Manchester United, Evans was called to the Northern Ireland national team and he has made over 40 appearances on international stage since 2006, helping his country qualify for the Euro 2016 finals.
Highlighted Team (Greece):
Former European champions Greece played their first official match on April 7, 1929, with the team suffering a heavy 4-1 loss to Italy in Athens. The Greeks booked their place at the FIFA World Cup finals in 1994 for the first time ever, but they failed to impress at the showpiece tournament in United States of America.
The Galanolefki were eliminated in the group stages of the 2010 FIFA World Cup as well, but they made it to the knockout stages of the tournament in Brazil four years later. However, the Greeks were more than unfortunate not to book their place in the quarter-finals as they were beaten by Costa Rica on penalties. However, Greece did remarkably well to win the 2004 European Championship and that is considered the national team’s biggest success.
Otto Rehhagel outplayed the likes of France and Czech Republic in the knockout stages to set up a meeting with hosts Portugal in the title game. Thanks to Angelos Charisteas’ goal 12 minutes into the second half Greece won the European Championship.
