Our prediction for this Portugal Primeira Liga match:
Buoyed by a 3-0 win over Santa Clara, Porto will look to cement top position when they face Guimaraes at Estadio D. Afonso Henriques on Sunday evening. The Dragons are determined to regain the Primeira Liga trophy, but head coach Sergio Conceicao must warn his men against complacency. Iran international Mehdi Taremi is pushing for a start, while defender Wilson Manafa remains in the recovery room.
Guimaraes, on the other hand, quickly bounced back from a 1-0 loss to Sporting CP, with the team beating Moreirense thanks to Rochinha’s goal. Since there are no fresh injury worries in the home team, we predict that Os Vimaranenses will hold the league leaders to a draw. Keep in mind, though, that Porto emerged triumphant in each of their last five meetings with Guimaraes in the Portuguese top flight.
Highlighted Player (Rafa Soares):
Born in Marco de Canaveses, Portugal, Rafa Soares is a professional footballer who plays for Vitoria Guimaraes as a left-back. Rafa is a product of the Porto football academy, but he did not see any game action in Primeira Liga with the Dragons.
After scoring eight goals in 61 appearances with Porto B, the Portuguese defender spent a couple of seasons on loan at Academica, Rio Ave, and Fulham. In 2018 he played for Portimonense, but nowadays, he wears the number 5 shirt at Vitoria Guimaraes. Rafa Soares has nine caps with the Portugal U21 team, but he has yet to earn a call-up for the Portugal senior team.
His primary position is left-back, but he is used as both left midfielder and left winger as well. Rafa’s preferred foot is left, and he has a contract with Vitoria Guimaraes until June 2021. Rafa Soares made his Primeira Liga debut against Academica back in January 2016, during his spell with Vitoria Setubal.
Highlighted Team (Porto):
Futebol Clube do Porto are one of Portugal’s biggest football clubs playing their matches in front of 50,000 people at their Estadio do Dragao. Porto form biggest rivalries with two other Big Three clubs in Portugal and regular league title contenders – Benfica and Sporting CP. Rivalries between the clubs stem from the historical, political, economical and cultural discrepancies between the cities of Porto and Lisbon. The Dragons, as they are commonly known in Portugal, are the second most successful Portuguese team with a total of 74 trophies to their name.
Porto hold a record of five consecutive league titles which are part of the total tally of 27 Primeira Liga trophies. FC Porto’s success extends to the international scene as well with seven European titles. Two-time European champions from 1987 and 2004, Porto also won two UEFA Cup/Europa League titles, the UEFA Super Cup and the International Cup on two occasions. Together with Barcelona, Real Madrid and Manchester United, Porto have the most appearances in the UEFA Champions League group stage – the total of 20.
