Our prediction for this Championship match:
All eyes will be on St Marry’s Stadium when Southampton and Norwich City face each other in the Championship derby on Saturday afternoon. The Saints kicked off the new Championship campaign with a 2-1 win at Sheffield Wednesday, but their display in the EFL Cup loss to Gillingham was anything but good. Influential midfielder Carlos Alcaraz returns to the starting XI as well as James Ward-Prowse, who was rested in the midweek defeat, while there are no injury worries in the home team.
The Canaries, on the other hand, did well to beat Hull City 2-1 in their Championship opener, while were not in action in the EFL Cup in midweek. Norwich City are high on confidence ahead of the trip to Southampton, but beating the Saints on the road is easier said than done. Taking everything into account, the share of spoils is on the cards at St Marry’s Stadium. The likes of Sorensen, Tomkinson, Sainz, and Hanley remain in the recovery room, while both Max Aarons and Milot Rashica are major doubts.
Highlighted Player (Max Aarons):
London Born Max Aarons is an English professional footballer who has represented England at the under-19 and under-21 level. At the club level, the right-back who was born on the 4th of January, 2000, started his youth career with Luton Town in 2009.
After seven years of development, he left Luton to join Norwich City in 2016 and broke into their first-team set up two years later. He made his professional debut for the Canaries on the 2nd of September, 2018, featuring in their 1-1 draw against Ipswich Town. He has since made a total of 50 appearances and is currently on a contract with the club that expires in 2024.
His performance in the 18/19 season is what earned the 19-year-old a call-up to the England Under-21 setup, making his debut for the same in an Under-21 European Qualifier against Turkey U21 on the 6th of September, 2019.
Highlighted Team (Southampton):
Southampton are an English football club that have been playing their home games at St Mary's Stadium since 2001. The Saints were based at The Dell in the past and the capacity of Southampton’s new stadium is 32,505. Southampton wear red and white striped shirts and the colour of the team’s away kit is navy and green.
The Saints have yet to win the Premier League trophy, but they did well to clinch the FA Cup title back in 1976, while participating in the final of the prestigious competition in 1900, 1902 and 2003. Southampton outplayed Manchester United in the 1976 FA Cup final and that is probably the club’s greatest victory ever.
The club are well known for their football academy and Real Madrid superstar Gareth Bale is one of the players who began their football carrier at the St. Mary’s Stadium outfit. Southampton’s fiercest rivals are Portsmouth and the two teams square off against each other in the South Coast Derby.
