Our prediction for this Segunda Division match:
All eyes will be on Estadio Jose Zorilla when Real Valladolid and Sporting Gijon square off against each other in the La Liga 2 day-one derby. La Pucela were not competitive in Primera Division last term and, no doubt, they are eager to make amends for the unsuccessful campaign. Defender Javi Sanchez misses Friday’s clash with injury, while summer signing Cesar de la Hoz is likely to make his Valladolid debut against Gijon.
Los Rojiblancos, on the other hand, failed to impress in preseason and given their difficulties on the road, we believe that there is a big value in betting on the promotion-chasing hosts. Both Axel Bamba and Jonathan Varane miss out with injuries, while Fran Villalba and Carlos Izquierdoz are rated doubtful for the match. In their last encounter at the venue Real Valladolid defeated Sporting Gijon thanks to Roque Mesa’s goal, which is yet another reason why home triumph should be considered.
Highlighted Player (Jordi Masip):
Jordi Masip is yet another La Masia product. Masip began his youth career at Mercantil, but in 2004 he joined the famous Barcelona football academy. The 180-cm-tall goalkeeper was struggling to establish himself as a first-team regular in Barcelona at senior level, but he played for Barca B in Segunda Division from 2008 to 2014.
After making 79 appearances for Barcelona B, Jordi Masip finally made his senior debut for the Catalan giants on December 16, 2014 in a 8-1 win over Huesca. The two teams faced in Copa del Rey and it has to be noted that Masip made his La liga debut for Barca in a 2-2 draw with Deportivo La Coruna in May, 2014.
In 2017 the Spanish shot-stopper born in Sabadell signed a three-year deal with Real Valladolid. Masip quickly established himself as a first-team regular at La Pucela and you should know that he managed to keep 11 clean sheets in 42 appearances for the club in the 2017/2018 Segunda Division campaign.
Highlighted Team (Gijon):
Sporting Gijon are a Spanish football club that competes in La Liga. Sporting Gijon’s home ground is El Molinon, the stadium that was built in 1908. El Molinon is the oldest football field in Spain and the capacity of the stadium is 30,000. Sporting Gijon’s home kit is red and white and the club’s main rivals are Real Oviedo.
The two teams take on each other in the Asturian derby. Sporting Gijon did remarkably well to finish the 1978/1979 La Liga campaign in second position in the standings and that is considered the club’s biggest success. Los Rojiblancos were runners-up in Spanish Copa Del Rey in 1981 and 1982, but they have yet to win the Spanish Cup.
The club was founded in 1905 and the club’s original name was Sporting Gijones. Sporting Gijon participated in the UEFA Cup on six occasions, but they did not record a good result in the European competition.
