A spot in the World Cup last 16 will be at stake when Serbia and Switzerland square off against each other at Stadium 974 on Friday afternoon. The Eagles dropped a two-goal advantage in a 3-3 draw with Cameroon, but a win over Switzerland will see them book their place in the knockout stages. Key defender Strahinja Pavlovic picked up a knock in the second group game, but he should recover in time to face the Rossocrociati. Fiorentina striker Dusan Vlahovic should play some part as well.
Murat Yakin’s men, on the other hand, failed to spoil Brazil’s party in Doha, but they are only one point away from making it to the last 16. Anyhow, given Serbia’s attacking potential, we believe that punters from all around the globe can find value in betting on Dragan Stojkovic’s men. Xherdan Shaqiri was rested against Brazil, but he should start in the decider. Noah Okafor remains in the recovery room.

Another impressive player who emigrated to Switzerland, Xherdan Shaqiri is a midfielder with excellent technical qualities, very strong in taking players on and creating chances for his teammates, while also being a danger from set pieces. The Serbian-born footballer formed an excellent midfielder pairing with Granit Xhaka at FC Basel, before making a high-profile move to Bayern Munich in the summer of 2012.
Shaqiri went on to prove a great deal of potential at Allianz Arena, scoring 11 goals in 52 Bundesliga matches, but he decided to leave in search of first team football, first joining Inter Milan and then moving to Stoke City. It was at Britannia Stadium that the attacking midfielder rediscovered his form and if he continues playing at such a high level, it won’t be long before he returns to the biggest stage.
Even when he was not playing regularly at club level, Shaqiri would always reserve his best performances for the national team, as witnessed by 17 goals in first 50 caps. The midfielder was especially impressive at the 2014 World Cup finals, where he scored no fewer than three goals.

Serbia have been playing as an independent nation since 2006. The Serbs made it to the 2010 FIFA World Cup finals and despite defeating star-studded Germany in the group stages of the showpiece tournament in South Africa, they eventually failed to book their place in the last 16. The Eagles, though, failed to qualify for the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil as they experienced all sorts of problems in their qualifying group.
A number of top-class footballers played for Serbia and former Manchester United defender Nemanja Vidic is regarded as one of the best players in the history of the Serbian national team. Vidic scored two goals in 56 appearances for Serbia and he announced his retirement from the national team on 24 October, 2011.
