Our prediction for this EFL Cup match:
Wolverhampton will be looking to book their place in the EFL Cup quarter-finals when they host Gillingham to their Molineux Stadium on Tuesday evening. The Wolves suffered a 2-0 loss to Arsenal before the international break, but a win over Gillingham will see them regain a much-needed a confidence. Fit-again Mexico forward Raul Jimenez is back from international duty, while all Neto, Kalajdzic, and Chiquinho remain in the recovery room.
Meanwhile, the Gills experienced all sorts of problems at the back in a 3-0 loss to Salford City, and given their difficulties in front of goal, we predict that the Wolves are going to advance to the EFL Cup quarter-finals. Both Alex MacDonald and Scott Kashket are pushing for a start, speaking of the away team. In their last meeting at Molineux Stadium, back in 2013, Wolverhampton outclassed Gillingham 4-0, which is yet another reason why home win should be considered.
Highlighted Player (Raul Jimenez):
Argentine forward Raul Jimenez began his career within the youth ranks of Club America, a club he went on to play 102 matches in all competitions and score 39 goals for before his 2014 move to Atletico Madrid. Despite signing a six-year deal with La Liga outfit in a reported transfer fee worth €11 million, Raul Jimenez never really managed to get his foot on the ground with the Colchineros.
After only 21 games and one goal for Atletico Madrid, the Mexico international moved to Portugal after his collapsed loan move to West Ham. Raul Jimenez missed the flight to London after reportedly oversleeping, but various reports suggest that he was advised by his agent Jorge Mendes to choose Benfica instead.
Portuguese giants initially acquired 50% of the player’s economic rights, while the remaining share of Jimenez’s contract was purchased in the summer of 2016 for a fee believed to be around €12 million. During his maiden season with the Eagles Mexico international played 28 Primeira Liga games, contributing with five goals during the process.
Highlighted Team (Gillingham):
Founded back in 1893, Gillingham FC are an English club that compete in the League One. The Gills are well known for their blue shirts with black stripes, but they wear white shirts with a little yellow and blue, and yellow shirts when playing on the travels.
Priestfield Stadium is the club’s home ground, with the venue holding up to 11,582 spectators. Gillingham City have been playing at the stadium since the club’s foundation. Speaking of the club’s main rivals, over the years the Gills have built up a rivalry to Swindon Town. However, it has to be noted that Swindon fans do not consider Gillingham their biggest rivals.
Former goalkeeper Roy Hillyard is the Gillingham City player with the most appearances. The English shot-stopper played for Gillingham City from 1974 to 1991, making 655 appearances for the club. Brian Yeo is the team’s all-time top scorer, netting 149 goals in 387 appearances for the club from 1963 to 1975.
