Our prediction for this Championship match:
Swansea City and Sheffield Wednesday square off against each other at Swansea.com Stadium on day 8 of the new Championship campaign. The Swans are still eyeing their first win of the season and it seems as if they will not have a better chance than this to get one. Oliver Coopers misses out through suspension, while all Liam Walsh, Steven Benda, and Azeem Abdulai are sidelined with injuries. Midfielder Josh Key is a major doubt after limping off with injury in a 1-1 draw with QPR.
The Owls are eager to record their first triumph of the process as well, but given their difficulties in front of goal, we predict that the South Wales outfit will pick up all three points from Saturday’s encounter. Both Mohamed Diaby and Mallik Wilks are sidelined with injuries, while Dominic Iorfa faces race against clock to be fit for the match.
Highlighted Player (Joe Allen):
Joe Allen is another high-quality footballer from the new generation of Wales internationals, who was part of the team that took Swansea from League One to the Premier League, and he had no problems adapting to arguably the strongest league championship in Europe.
Allen operated as a deep-lying playmaker as the Swans impressed upon reaching the elite division, with his excellent passing skills persuading Liverpool to splash £15 million on his services. The central midfielder didn’t exactly manage to develop into an indispensable member of the side at Anfield, but he is considered an important squad player and has always performed well when called upon.
Meanwhile, he has been one of the pillars of the most successful team in the Wales history together with Gareth Bale, Ashley Williams and Aaron Ramsey, while even representing Great Britain at the 2012 Summer Olympics in London. Allen started five games for the Dragons as they secured the first ever appearance at the European Championship finals.
Highlighted Team (Sheffield Wednesday):
Sheffield Wednesday are one of the two famous clubs from the city of Sheffield (South Yorkshire). The Owls compete in the English second tier (Championship) and they play their home matches at Hillsborough.
The venue was the scene of the Hillsborough disaster which occurred in 1989 when 96 Liverpool supporters were crushed to death in the FA Cup semi-final. It has to be noted that the World Cup (1966) and the Euro (1996) matches were played at Hillsborough.
Sheffield Wednesday have won four First Division trophies (1902/2903, 1903/1904, 1928/1929, 1929/2930) and they finished the 1960/1961 campaign in second place in the standings. The Owls have clinched three FA Cup trophies (1896, 1907, 1935), with the team winning the League Cup in 1991.
Sheffield Wednesday defeated English giants Manchester United (1-0) in the title game. Sheffield United are regarded as the Owls’ main rivals and the two teams face each other in the Steel City derby.
