Our prediction for this Europa League match:
Sparta Prague will look to keep their Europa League knockout stages hopes alive when they take on Sparta Prague at epet ARENA. The Czechs are three points behind second-place Rangers in Group C, meaning that this has to go down as a must-win game for the home side. Midfielder Lukas Haraslin is pushing for a start after scoring a brace for Slovakia in a 4-2 win over Iceland, while both Krejci and Rynes remain on the sidelines with injuries.
Los Beticos, on the other hand, aim to retain top position in the standings and, no doubt, they should be happy with one point from Thursday’s encounter. As Sparta Prague are tough to beat at home, we are tempted to put our money on draw. Fit-again forward Nabil Fekir is pushing for a start, while all Claudio Bravo, Rui Silva, Youssouf Sabaly, and Marc Bartra are out of contention through injuries.
Highlighted Player (Willian José):
Well-travelled Brazilian international Willian Jose was born in Porto Calvo and made his first football steps at a local Clube de Regatas. It was at the age of 17 that he was snapped by Gremio Barueri where he made 26 league appearances and scored six goal in his first – and only – senior season at the club.
In 2011, Willian Jose moved to Deportivo Maldonado but his five-year stint with the Uruguay outfit was marked by no less than seven different loan spells, one of which was to La Liga heavyweights Real Madrid. Standing at 186cm tall, Willian Jose is a notable presence in the box. This powerful centre forward will use his physicality to hold up ball and bring his teammates into play.
The Brazilian international did well to make a name for himself in Spain by playing for Zaragoza and Las Palmas, respectively, before he sealed a permanent move to Real Sociedad in 2016. A member of both FIFA U-20 World Cup and South American Youth Championship winning sides with Brazil in 2011, Willian Jose has not been given a chance to prove his worth at the senior level with Selecao.
Highlighted Team (Sparta Prague):
Established in 1893, Sparta Prague is one of Europe’s oldest clubs and the most successful side in Czech Republic, having won no fewer than 36 league titles and 27 Czech Cup trophies. The club play their games at the Generali Arena in Prague and hold a long-lasting rivalry with Slavia Prague.
Sparta Prague enjoyed their Golden Years in the 1960’s, when average attendance was nearly 40,000 and players like Jiri Tichy, Andrej Kvasnak and Vaclav Masek entertained the crowds week in week out. Rudi largely impressed in the maiden Champions League campaign during the 1991/92 season as they finished second in the semi-final group, meaning they were among top 4 European sides at the moment.
Nevertheless, Sparta Prague have enjoyed little to no success on the European stage since, reaching the Champions League knockout stages on just one occasion, with their latest major coup the return of prodigal son Tomas Rosicky from Arsenal.
