Our prediction for this EFL Cup match:
Cardiff City kick off their EFL Cup campaign with a home game against League Two side Colchester United. The Welsh outfit are high on confidence following a 2-2 draw with promotion hopefuls Leeds United and the Whites saved one point in the stoppage time. Joe Ralls limped off with injury in the Championship opener, with Gambia midfielder Ebou Adams likely to step up. Goalkeeper Ryan Allsop is a major doubt.
The U’s, on the other hand, were not in action at the weekend as their round 1 clash against Swindon Town was postponed due to waterlogged pitch. New signing Ellis Iandolo as well as centre-forward Joe Taylor should make their official Colchester United debuts against Cardiff City. Anyhow, home win should be considered as the Bluebirds looked sharp in front of goal in the Elland Road clash. When the two teams met in the FA Cup back in 2015 Cardiff defeated Colchester 3-1.
Highlighted Player (Callum Robinson):
Born in Northampton, Callum Robinson started his career at Aston Villa. Having gone through the youth ranks with the Villans, Robinson was given his first-team debut in 2013. As a product of the Aston Villa academy, Robinson unfortunately never got a chance to prove his worth at the club and ended up playing no less than 4 league appearances during his three-year stay at Villa Park.
Various loan spells – at Preston North End on two occasions and Bristol City – brought mixed fortunes for the striker up until 2016 when he sealed a permanent move with the Lillywhites. Robinson represented England at U16, U17, U19 and U20 levels but raised plenty of eyebrows when he declared for the Republic of Ireland in March 2018 through his late grandmother who was from Monaghan.
The striker made his senior team breakthrough in Republic of Ireland’s 2-2 draw with Celtic in Scott Brown’s testimonial match and will be hoping to prove doubters wrong and prove his motive is bigger than career opportunism.
Highlighted Team (Colchester):
Founded in 1937, Colchester United are a professional football club that compete in the League Two, the English fourth tier. The U’s welcome their rivals at Colchester Community Stadium, the venue which has the capacity of 10,105 people.
Colchester United are well known for their blue kit, but white is the dominant colour of their away kit. The U’s have an official fans association known as the CUSA. Colchester supporters consider Wycombe Wanderers the club’s fiercest rivals, but the rivalries with Southend United and Ipswich Town are big as well. Colchester United did well to win the FA Trophy in the 1991/92 season, with the team clinching the Essex Senior Cup trophy in the 2009/10 season.
In December 1961 the U’s recorded their biggest win, with the team rolling over Bradford City 9-1 in the Fourth Division. Colchester United repeated the success 44 years later as they hammered Leamington 9-1 in the FA Cup round 1.
