Our prediction for this Europa Conference League match:
Stockhorn Arena will be the centre of attention when Lugano and Gent square off against each other in an eagerly-awaited Conference League campaign. Lugano are a real force to be reckoned with at home, with the team eyeing their sixth consecutive win at Stockhorn Arena and they are surely capable of making life difficult for Gent in Thursday’s encounter. Bear in mind, though, that experienced midfielder Mattia Bottani misses out through suspension.
De Buffalo’s, on the other hand, experienced all sorts of problems at the back in a 6-0 loss to Anderlecht at the weekend. As Lugano are tough to beat at home, we do not believe that Gent are capable of grabbing more than one point from the match. Both Noah Fadiga and Aime Omgba are out of contention for the visiting side, while defender Hugo Gambor faces race against the clock to be fit for Thursday’s showdown.
Highlighted Player (Sven Kums):
Belgian defender Sven Kums began his youth career at Dilbeek Sport and in 1996 he joined Anderlecht. Despite spending seven years at the club, he did not see any game action with the Belgian giants at senior level. After ending his loan spells with the likes of Lierse and Kortrijk, he signed a permanent deal with de Kerels in 2008.
The 176-cm-tall midfielder, who was born on 26 February, 1988, scored 12 goals in 116 league appearances for Kortrijk and in 2011 he moved to Netherlands, signing a contract with Heerenveen. In 2013 he returned to Belgium, joining Zulte Waregem.
In the summer of 2014 he moved to fellow Belgian outfit Gent and at the end of the 2015/2016 season he signed a loan deal with Udinese. Kums has 12 caps for Belgium U21 and it has to be noted that his father Ludo Kums is working as a coach at Anderlecht. Sven Kums is a centre midfielder, but he plays as both attacking midfielder and defensive midfielder as well.
Highlighted Team (Lugano):
Lugano are a professional football club from Switzerland which won their first domestic trophy back in 1938. Three years later Lugano lifted their second Swiss Super League title and in 1949 they won their third and last trophy in the national championship, with the team finishing the process seven points clear of second-placed Basel.
Lugano are considered one of the oldest clubs in Switzerland as they were founded back in 1908. 14 years later they were promoted to the Swiss top flight for the first time in the club’s history. Lugano are well known for their black and white jerseys and they welcome their rivals at Cornaredo Stadium. The stadium was built back in 1951 and the capacity of the venue is 6.330.
The Swiss club have yet to participate in the Champions League, but they did well to make it to the Europa League group stages in the 2017/2018 season. In the 2002/2003 season Lugano participate in the Europa League qualifiers, but they were eliminated by Ventspils in the process.
