Our prediction for this Europa League match:
Georgios Karaiskakis Stadium will host Thursday’s Europa League game between Olympiakos and Fenerbahce. The Thrylos are sitting in second place in Group D, but they can’t afford any complacency as Fener are breathing down their neck. Experienced attacker Youssef El Arabi, who scored a brace in a 3-2 win over AEK Athens, will be the man to watch in the home team, and he is likely to prove a handful for the opposition defenders.
Vitor Pereira’s troops, on the other hand, aim to build on a 2-1 win over Galatasaray. Fenerbahce are brimming with confidence ahead of the trip to Piraeus, but seeing that both Enner Valencia and Luiz Gustavo are sidelined with injuries, we are tempted to put our money on Olympiakos, who are a real force to be reckoned with at home. When the two teams met in Istanbul earlier in the process Olympiakos outplayed Fenerbahce 3-0.
Highlighted Player (Yann M Vila):
Formerly a blistering talent and one of the most promising youngsters in French football, Yann M’Vila ended up being a class book example of a player who made all the wrong choices. Having started his career at the age of six with ES Sains-Saint-Fussein, M’Villa was quick to turn heads of the big boys. He was given a chance to move through youth ranks at Rennes where he was given a professional debut in 2009 but it was not long after that his problematic lifestyle came back to haunt him.
Yann M’Villa got suspended from all national teams after an unauthorized night out while on U21 duty with France, a ban which left mark on his club career as well. Despite interest from the likes of Arsenal and Tottenham, M’Villa was sold to Rubin kazan in January 2013 which was the time his nomadic experience as a footballer began.
Spells as Inter Milan and Sunderland failed to help him get back to prominence and meet the early expectations, however. Currently a St Etienne player, M’Villa is hoping to re-establish himself back in his homeland.
Highlighted Team (Fenerbahce):
Fenerbahce are one of the biggest football clubs in Turkey. The Kanaryalar were founded on 3 May, 1907 as Fenerbahce Futbol Kulubu. Fener won their first domestic trophy in 1959 and they quickly established themselves as one of the main forces in Turkish football.
In 2014 Fenerbahce clinched their 19th league title, with the team finishing the season nine points clear of Besiktas. Galatasaray are considered Fener’s bitterest rivals and the two teams face each other in Kitalar Arasi Derbi. The rivalry between the clubs started back in 1934, when a friendly between the two teams was abandoned due to riots. Besiktas are regarded as Fenerbahce’s big rivals as well.
The likes of Mujdat Yetkiner, Zeki Riza Sporel, Aykut Kocaman, Emre Belozoglu, Alex, Nicolas Anelka, Diego Lugano, Roberto Carlos and Dirk Kuyt are famous footballers who played for the club in the past. The Kanaryalar play their home games at Sukru Saracoglu Stadium, the venue that was opened in 1908. Fener’s home kits are navy blue and yellow.
