Our prediction for this FA Cup match:
Abbey Stadium will host Saturday’s FA Cup game between Cambridge United and Grimsby Town, the two League Two sides. Cambridge United have been involved in some low-scoring games of late, with under 2.5 goals being netted in each of their last five games in all competitions. Anyhow, the U’s are likely to adopt yet another defence-minded approach against Grimsby. Mamadou Jobe remains on the sidelines with injury, while Gambia international Saikou Janneh is pushing for a start.
The Black and Whites, on the other hand, rolled over Plymouth 5-1 in their FA Cup opener, and it is no wonder the odds for away win have been dropping. In the previous meeting between the two sides Cambridge crushed Grimsby 3-0, but the share of spoils is on the cards this time out as the U’s are tough to beat at home. There are no fresh injury worries in the away team.
Highlighted Player (Liam O’Neil):
Born in Cambridge, England on July 31, 1993, Liam O’Neil is an English footballer who plays as both defender as midfielder for Cambridge United in the League Two. O’Neil is a product of the Cambridge United football school, but he played for Histon during his youth career as well.
In the summer of 2012 he joined WBA youth academy, and it has to be noted that he made three appearances for the Baggies at senior level in all competitions. Liam O’Neil played for the likes of VPS and Scunthorpe United on loan as well before joining Chesterfield in 2015.
After scoring two goals in 45 appearances for the club in the league, O’Neil moved to Cambridge United in the winter of 2017. As his mother comes from Wales, O’Neil is open to play for the Wales national team, but he has yet to earn a cap with the Dragons.
Highlighted Team (Grimsby):
Founded back in 1878 as Grimsby Pelham, Grimsby Town are a professional football club that compete in League Two, the English fourth tier. Grimsby Town welcome their opponents at Blundell Park, the stadium which has the capacity of 9,027 people (all seated).
The Pilgrims are well known for their black jerseys with white stripes, whilst blue is the dominant colour of their away kit. Grimsby Town made it to the FA Trophy final on two occasions (2012/13, 2015/16), but they have yet to win the title in the competition. The likes of Hull City and Scunthorpe United are regarded as the club’s main rivals.
The Pilgrims registered their biggest win on September 4, 1925, as they crushed Tranmere Rovers 8-0. Speaking of their heaviest loss, Grimsby Town were beaten by Arsenal 9-1 on January 28, 1931. Pat Glover is sitting in top position in the club’s all-time goal-scoring chart with 180 league goals on his account.
