Our prediction for this League 1 match:
Bristol Rovers will look to recover from a 2-0 defeat to Accrington when they face Wycombe Wanderers in the League One round 28. The Pirates have been producing fine displays on home soil of late, with the team winning three of their last four home fixtures, and they must be high on spirits ahead of Saturday’s showdown. Ryan Loft is pushing for a recall to the starting XI, while there are no fresh injury worries in the home team.
The Chairboys, on the other hand, are only two points behind the playoffs berth. Since the visitors are eager to make amends for a 1-0 loss to Sheffield Wednesday, we believe that both teams to score betting option should be considered. Experienced forward Sam Vokes could sneak into the starting XI, while both Dom Gape and Tjay De Barr are major doubts after missing the last league match with injuries.
Highlighted Player (Glenn Whelan):
Probably one of the most underrated footballers in Premier League history, Glenn Whelan was born on 13 January 1982 in Dublin and he went on to enjoy a very successful career on club and international level.
Following spells with Manchester City, Bury and Sheffield Wednesday, the defensive midfielder found his peace at the Britannia Stadium, making over 250 Premier League appearances for Stoke City and keeping his place in the side under both Tony Pulis and Mark Hughes. Predominantly focused on doing the dirty defensive work and helping out the back four, Whelan never quite made the headlines for his style of play or quality of his displays, but remained an important player for both club and country.
The midfielder has so far made over 70 appearances for the Republic of Ireland national team, wearing the captain’s armband on several occasions, and starting all three group games at the Euro 2012 finals, while helping The Green Army qualify for the Euro 2016 as well.
Highlighted Team (Wycombe):
Founded back in 1887, Wycombe Wanderers are one of the oldest clubs in the League One. The Chairboys are well known for their sky blue and dark blue shirts, but the colour of their away kit is orange combined with gun-metal gray.
Wycombe Wanderers host their rivals at Adams Park, a small stadium in Sands Industrial Estate which can hold up to 10,137 people. Milton Keynes Dons are seen as the club’s main rivals, with the two teams facing each other in the Buckinghamshire derby. Wycombe Wanderers made it to the FA Cup semis in the 2000/2001, with the team repeating the success in the League Cup six seasons later.
It has to be noted that the Chairboys have two FA Trophy titles (1991, 1993). Legendary midfielder Gareth Ainsworth is considered one of the club’s most famous players. Ainsworth scored 16 goals in 112 league appearances for Wycombe Rovers.
